  • IST Attacked

SVM is heading towards IST. Let's hope things are calm and secure by the time it arrives.

Current reports are 10 dead and 20 injured in the international terminal from a terror attack.

Other reports are claiming 60 injured.

Very sad day for Turkey and those affected. IST has grown to be a major hub and has ovetaken FRA for passenger traffic. SQ have been developing extensive connections to small European cities and other places such as Africa using IST and TK as a partner.

Reports are indicating that the death toll has now risen to 28.

Very sad. Rest in peace to the victims and condolences to their family and friends.

Istanbul is a great city that I enjoyed visiting, and it's a shame how it has become an increasingly unstable situation there.

Flightradar24 tracking indicates that it made a 180 over India and is now diverting back to SIN.

SVM landed at SIN a few minutes ago. Can't blame SQ for not wanting to add to the mess at IST even if the airport has reopened.

ST reports that another IST flight, SQ392D, will depart again at 1230. It's going to be a very long day for the pax.

The count is even worse again. Authorities have revised the number killed up to 41 but expect it could rise further. The number injured has jumped to a massive 239. This is a very sad day indeed.

As sad and tragic as these attacks are, you find yourself no longer being surprised. It appears they have now decided to attack airports rather than aircraft as they are much easier. Another couple of these and I see some draconian security measures coming in outside airports, making our travelling experience even more 'fun' than it already is....

Security at the drop off area at MIA was noticeably heavier when I flew out this morning.

This time it's not so much under attack as under a coup. Sections of the Turkish military have reportedly taken control of IST and closed the airport. SQ292 appears to have performed a 180 over India and has returned to SIN. Events are still unfolding but the coup appears to be very real. EST and SAW also under military control as well as television stations and the president taking to Skype for communication.

There are images in the media of people stranded in a business lounge at the airport, which probably would be one of the better locations. The previous SQ291 appears to have flown off normally before the troubles began.

I think it's safe to predict this may cause somewhat of a rethink of developing codeshares with TK and equipment upgrades on SQ292/1 which only makes SQ's battle with the ME3 a bit harder.

My thoughts are with the Turkish citizens and anyone currently trapped at IST with no way out.

Yes, quite right, mixed up my Aus/NZ and Euro flight numbers.

SQ392 has now been cancelled as has the corresponding SQ391.

The latest advise from SQ is as follows:

SQ392/16 July from Singapore to Istanbul returned to Singapore at 1021hrs (Singapore Time) due to the situation in Turkey.
SQ391/16 Jul from Istanbul to Singapore has also been cancelled.
For customers who wish to change their travel plans, Singapore Airlines will waive all fees for re-booking or re-routing for customers holding confirmed tickets on SIA flights arriving in or departing from Istanbul.
The waiver is valid for tickets issued on or before 16 July 2016, for travel to/from Istanbul up to 31 August 2016. The new travel should commence by 31 October 2016. Fare top-ups may apply for re-routing.
The waiver applies to redemption tickets as well.
Customers may contact their local SIA reservations office for assistance. Contact details can be found at http://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/contact-us/
Singapore Airlines will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
The coup seems to have been unsuccessful but what remains is a powder keg. Between this and the recent terrorist attack, IST traffic is going to see demand plunge.
