  • Oversize/not regular size items

Hi all, anyone has experience checking in oversize cargo ex SYD? It's flat packed in a carton with measurements 144x86x18 cms. I'm well within my weight allowance.

    Hi Kaysquare,

Can't speak for SYD, but I've checked in oversize items at PER before. I imagine the process is much the same.

It's quite simple really. You head to the check-in desk as normal. They will ask you to put the item on the scales so that they can weigh it and tag it. You then have to lift it down again and you will be directed to take it to a special counter where airport staff will take it off your hands.

There is quite a bit of lifting/dragging to do around the terminal. Plus you have to get it there in the first place. So be prepared to work up a bit of a sweat

You might also be asked to sign the back of the baggage tag (seems to happen to me about 50% of the time). I guess it depends on what you are checking in, but they often mark it as "fragile". I'm never too concerned about signing these things. It should be fairly obvious if the item has been severely mishandled along the route, plus I always have travel insurance as a backup. But to date I have never had any cause for concern. My items have always arrived in very good condition.

As far as dimensions go, the SQ website states a maximum size for checked baggage of 200x75x80cm. Your item doesn't quite fit into these dimensions, but I can't see that it will be a problem. I've checked in similar sized items to yours, and nobody has ever said anything. As long as it looks reasonable.

There is also a weight limit of 32kgs per checked item. They usually are very strict about that. Heavier items will have to be split up, or else sent as cargo.

Is your final destination SIN? If so, there is an oversize conveyor in the middle of the baggage hall, where your item will be unceremoniously dumped on arrival. Don't forget to go and pick it up!

    Enjoy your trip

I've been flying with a bicycle in in box about 180x100x25cm many times on SQ now, including from most Aussie airports and incl. SYD. No problem at all and usually ground staff has been really helpful.
You may need to sign a limited liability tag and as long as you're in the weight limits, that's it. Either you bring it to a special counter, or often they'll call someone to pick it up.

Thanks for the tip DinkumDave. My odd sized items were indeed found there!

There wasn't any issue with the boxes' dimensions either.

Slightly off topic and do not expect an answer, but why do sq always requested that small bags/handbags be placed in overhead compartment and under the seat, and can't be placed beside you or on your lap. I just realised only sq did this, as i was trying other airlines (i flew sq almost exclusively until 2014). Asiana, ana, sas, garuda, air canada. All seems to not be bothered by that.
