Just wanted to solicit views on the service you receive in J/Y class. I've been a QPPS for the last 4 years and the first 3 years were exceptional whether in J or Y class. However, I've been noticing inconsistent service in my last couple of J flights. During the flight, sometimes I'm greeted by surname all the time and sometimes I'm not. When I disembark, sometimes they bid goodbye by name and sometimes they don't. So long as it's a safe and smooth flight, I really don't care and I get that the crew are human beings with emotions so they could just be having a rough day etc. but when the service is inconsistent it just makes it that more obvious and hence got me thinking. Wondering if anyone has similar experiences?

Whether QPP or TPP, the service is very dependent on the set of crew. Indeed it is inconsistent in that sometimes the chief steward/ess will come over personally at the start of the flight to welcome you back and to ensure that you ask him/her for anything if required, sometimes they do not. I would say the ratio is about 9:1 in J and 3:2 in Y. If I'm in Y, I expect Y service; the "welcome back" is a plus.
However, what is consistent has been that without fail, whether in J or Y, they will ensure that I get a complete choice for my meal. Of course service levels are better in J. The better crews will remember if you've skipped a meal because of a late flight and will come over when you awake to check if you were hungry. A few times, I did not have my BTC meal because of this, but they kept it for me just the same on their own initiative.
At the end of the day, whether I had a really "great" flight depends on the actual crew themselves, their personality and how much interaction we had - it's the x-factor some crew have.

I have just flown into PVG with SQ. Not only did they say goodbye etc when I got off but a couple of them came and had a chat next to the luggage belt and I walked out through customs chatting with the Chief Steward until we went our separate ways.

I think that 'service' and 'greetings' are two totally different things.
Whether or not you are greeted, everyone working in your cabin will know that you are a QPPS and they will go out of their way to respond to your needs.
Service in general has become a lot more inconsistent than in the past and that includes the whole service from handing out menus on the ground or asking for drinks after take-off to the point where they serve meals and look after you during the flight.
Service in general has been one of SQ core strength and protected them from people defecting to competitors. I was on four regional flights in J on SQ and on my first three flights I didn't know why I was paying so much money for the average service I received. My last flight of the four was outstanding and I even wrote back a feedback letter to SQ. SQ needs to work harder to keep their trademark service above the level of all others: Very good service is an art and SQ has mastered it - they just need to make sure they don't slip.

All SQ birds are widebodies, ergo a lot of pax.

I recently flew 4 sectors in J for the first time as QPPS, and on the second one the Lady In Red made a big deal of welcoming me back onboard. On the others, nothing so special (but still the excellent service I have come to expect).
The thing that puzzles me about PPS status is, that if you fly J and are already *G, then I don't see it offers anything extra, other than maybe it's of some help in redeeming Business Saver seats off the waitlist (which I have just done for the first time).Last edited by Jaunt411; 21 August 2014, 01:21 PM.

Funny you should say that. My best ever experience was prior to being QPPS and possibly not even KFEG. I was in J flying from Houston to Moscow and the Man in Red (I wished I could remember his name) was simply amazing. Not only was he engaging and funny, he seemed to really enjoy his job and chatting with the passengers. It could simply be his disposition but this topped the cake for me, even more so than the times I've flown in Suites.
