  • Is SQ Best Option To Fly BOM-KUL

(Pls ignore the title typo it's meant to be BOM-KUL)
Hi, I will be flying to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia for my Soton university term starting in end of September. The only direct flights are Malindo and Malaysia airlines, which don't seem to be a good option given recent events. Singapore flies via Singapore of course, I've never had transit in Singapore before, there are options of 1 hour stopover or 1 hr 55 and obviously more, with SilkAir being the connecting flight from SIN-KUL. Will SQ give me boarding passes for both the flights in Mumbai? Or will I have to check in again at SQ?

Also, no excess student baggage allowance from SQ? The other options are Thai Airways via BKK at slightly lesser price than SQ, and Thai offers only 20 kg baggage so not preferable as well. There's also Sri Lankan via Colombo at a lesser price.

    Hi Shivank17,

I would fly either direct on MH or via Singapore on SQ.

The recent MH17 disaster could have happened to any airline, and I consider MH a safe airline to fly on. I would have no issue flying MH if the schedule/timing/price worked out best.

If you decide to fly on SQ or Silkair, a one hour connection at Changi is quite achievable. That said, if I were doing the connection via SIN, I would do the 1 hr 55 min connection (but that's just me. I tend to build buffers into all my trips). If my flight arrives early enough, I would head to the transfer counter and ask to change to an earlier flight.

I believe you would be able to get your onward boarding pass in BOM, but I am not 100% sure.

From memory, when I flew MEL-DEL-MEL last year I was not able to do online check-in in either direction because it involved DEL, but I had no problem getting boarding passes for both sectors at the first airport of departure. I definitely didn't have to pick up a boarding pass at SIN. (That was SQ => SQ though. I don't know anything about how MI flights interchange.)

        Shivank17,

For a start, SQ's checked bag allowance of 30kg in Y is relatively generous compared to MH. Hence, I do not believe that it is a huge problem.

That being said, if you do need extra allowance, I'm pretty sure that a travel agent will be able to arrange a student fare for you with extra 20kg. However, it does not come without a cost.

MH started offering 30kg in Y even before SQ started doing so. Only difference is MH has a limit of 2 pieces.

No disrespect to KUL airport (probably would win against most other airports in the world) but SIN airport is a jewel. I would recommend transit via SIN and take 1hr 55 min layover to marvel the beauty. Also you might get to travel in an A380 if you pick SQ 423/424

              Thanks for the response, yflyer.

MH would actually be a good option for me since they fly codeshare with Jet and I've Silver on Jet Privilege, plus after 2 years in Malaysia I'll be going to UK and Jet flies there too, but still, I'm not concerned about MH17 more about MH370 disappearance I would say, plus SQ offers a much better product at the same price and I really don't mind a stopover.

Yeah, that's what I'm confused about and MI doesn't operate flights from Mumbai as well, so. But if I book it as SQ xxxx flight operated by MI, I wonder if I'll get the boarding pass in Mumbai itself, really no clue how it works with them.

Oh I see, at around 150$ more than SQ economy fare, SriLankan is providing business class with 40 kg allowance, would that be a better option, cause I'm assuming extra baggage would cost somewhat similar?

Indeed, MH provides 30 KG as well, that's not the issue.

Yes, I intend to go on SQ 423 only since it's a red-eye flight and I can reach KL in the morning.
