  • headphones?

    Hello all,

I'll be travelling from SIN-SFO on the 77W, and was just wondering if there is any way to get my own headphones to work. all the pics ive seen indicate a dual prong arrangement. is there any way to get my in ears to work by sticking it in a single jack, or is one of those adapters necessary?

    thanks in advance!

No, the usual headphone miniplug won't work. Just get an adapter. Krisshop has it inflight for S$15, but it is available for S$5-10 in many electronics shops / airport stores. I have seen them going at S$3 at Funan Center.

I've gotten my earphones to work even with a single-prong jack. The trick is not to push the jack all the way in, but almost. At a sweet spot you'll get audio output on both sides of your earphones like you normally would. But of course bear in mind that the jack isn't fully plugged in so it may disconnect easily. I've been meaning to get an adapter for years but I've survived without one so far with this trick.

alright, thanks! might as well pick one up in changi before my flight. I'll also see if it does work without the adapter as well. do i need to stick it into any specific jack, or if i find the right balance on any jack will stereo sound come out?

Sidewinderx5, I would follow yflyer's recommendation and use the adapter. The single jack method will become frustrating after awhile as you would almost have to keep you hand on the jack to keep it at the sweet spot mentioned by Jumbojet Lover. Since it is not locked in place by the final "click", any movement will probably cause it to detach.

If you have time, go to Sim Lim Sq (assuming you're based in SIN) to get them; they are very cheap compared to the airport and you can buy a few at a time (I tend to lose them).

            IIRC, either one will do.

I gingerly let go and don't move while watching the IFE. But yeah I should get a proper adapter from SLS sometime.

More importantly, the sound would be mono, not stereo...

Changi sells it for around $11 in most of the shops that stock these there. Mine's 'McGear' branded.

Detouring to SLS for a $3 item, assuming a cost to/fro is calculated, would have to be less than $4 per trip for it make financial sense. In terms of time wasted, it's ridiculous!

Tried that method and it came out stereo. Used an adaptor and the sound was mono. Headphone in question is a QC15. Go figure!

The SQ headphone sockets have two mono sockets, so if you don't use an adapter, and stick a normal stereo miniplug into one of them and get sound from both sides of the earphones (by sticking it partly in), the most you will get is mono sound coming from both ears. It may be good enough, but it certainly isn't stereo.

If you used an adapter and sound came out of only one ear or was mono, then the plug or the adapter may have been faulty. Those plugs see a lot of wear and tear, and some are quite loose.

Bose QC15 comes with 2 types of cables....one is the conventional, the other one is the one with the iPhone / Ipad remote control on the cable.

You might have problem having one side audio if you use the cable with the remote control with the adaptor plug.

Yup exactly that's the problem. Ive resorted to using conventional headphones for that one purpose. Otherwise I'm in the QCs if left to my own devices.
