  • Baggage allowance - student allowance as well as general rules

Does anybody know if there's any way to get expanded baggage allowance if you're on a redemption ticket?

I'm travelling to LHR to begin a 3-year course, and money is tight so I booked a one-way ticket with my father's miles. I called in today to check if I could get an increased baggage allowance since I read from previous threads on here (last post in http://www.sqtalk.com/forum/showthre...?t=9481&page=3 for example) that they do give an additional 10kg.

However, they have informed me that ever since the general baggage allowance increase, the staff no longer have the discretion to issue any waiver, not even during check-in.

This of course implies that if baggage allowance is exceeded upon check-in, it's now definitely charged, without any possibility of being waived.

Does anybody have any first-hand experience with this new rule?

If they throw the book at you, the costs per kilo is about US$60/kg assuming you're flying SIN-LHR - very high if you ask me. I would make sure I have a back-up plan for the excess to go on if they kick up a fuss at check-in. In fact, it might even be worthwhile to buy the stuff in London instead of bringing them over.

The information you have received is correct. No waiver is allowed under most circumstances. The only exception is for PPS/Solitaire pax. In MEL, for example, any overrides on the excess have to be approved by the MEL General manager, even station manager does not have the authority.

Could this be as a result of the additional 10kg that has been added to all classes? I used to be always over the Y limit of 20kg coming home but never paid an extra cent, leaving from a whole variety of Euro ports.

Now that everyone has 10kg more, it could be considered we've got enough leeway already and if everyone were to bring that extra 10kg on, that's adding 2.8 tonne to a full A330 or 4.7 tonne to some A380s.

(Not that I'm seeking to support a curtailing of our baggage limits, says he who can navigate solo through city streets, crowded trains or a busy airport with two suitcases, a backpack and a large laptop bag... )

It was indeed due to the increase in baggage allowance. In addition, since SQ changed to Amadeus for their check in and reservation system, any excess baggage has to be accounted and justified for. The system doesn't allow for any leeway when it comes to excess.

I've noticed off late in the F check-in areas of T2 and T3 that the staff are now jotting down the weight of my pieces of luggage and adding them together to calculate a total. I'm holding the supplementary TPP card and I haven't been hassled about luggage restrictions in the past (never been more than 1/2kg over the limit) except once in SYD where one of my suitcases was 1.3kg over the limit as I had purchased some sports equipment and I had to reshuffle.

I wonder if this is a sign of things to come given they recently setup a committee to search to increase and find new revenue streams.

As fuel prices continue to stay strong (actually there're more reasons for it to fall but events like the insurgency in Iraq gives reasons for the market to ignore the bearish supply signs), airlines should concern themselves on managing fuel usage. Managing weight or as Viraj735 suggests, maximizing revenue through it like LCCs would be a way to go.

Personally, as a philosophy, I travel light. Whether it's a one-week trip or a two-week one, my one bag usually weighs less than 13kg. Only exception is when I become a shopping courier for my family and friends - or when I drag my 7kgs of camera equipment on my holiday. Sorry OT.
