  • long transit luggage question

    Hi all,

I've got a question regarding SQ luggage transfer. I have the following flight:
MEL-SIN on SQ leaving at 3.40pm on May 3rd
SIN-SUB on MI leaving at 4.30pm on May 5th

Will I be able to check my luggage all the way to surabaya at Melbourne airport?
I will be bringing around 100kg of luggage, so I really don't want to have to claim the luggage before the final destination. Any thoughts?

Yes, you should be able to check-in your baggage to final destination. At SIN, passengers of SQ or MI flights can check-in with baggage at Changi up to 48-hrs before their flight.

Although you can bring it to the check-in counter at Changi to check it in up to 48 hours before, are you sure that he will be able to check it through all the way from SUB when the connection is more than 24 hours, which is a different issue?

Yes, that's exactly my concern. If I have to claim the luggage and check in again at Changi, how can I ask for assistance with the luggages? Do I request it when I check in at MEL?
Since I injured my back recently, I won't be able to lift the heavy luggages alone at Changi

Unfortunately, you won't be able to check all your luggages to SUB from MEL, as it is beyond 48 hours from your check in time in MEL. However, you should be able to check those bags in upon your arrival in SIN.

Best recommendation is asking for MAAS (Meet and Assist) service. You can call the reservation to request the service.

During check in, you can explain that you need assistance with picking your bags from the carousel. On arrival, you can ask the MAAS staff to accompany you to the departure level to check in those bags. Hope that helps.

24 hours is fine, it's the 48 before that's the problem as singaporu_kooku says. A few weeks ago my mum flew SYD-SIN on SQ232 (12:15 - 17:20) on the Saturday and then flew home on Sundays SQ328 to MAN at 23:10 with us. Her checked luggage was booked all the way to MAN when she checked in at SYD on the Saturday morning.

              Interesting - good to know!

(Also, though SIN is obviously not a problem in this regard, I wouldn't dream of checking a baggage on an overnight - let alone ~48h connection - in a number of airports. You will probably find it considerably lighter when you pick it up at the final destination!)

Thanks for the advices everyone, it seems like checking it in all the way to SUB at MEL is out of option. I think I have to change the itinerary as well since my luggage allowance will be reduced to 80kg if I check in at SIN. Or could I show the check in agent at Changi my F bp from MEL to avoid the excess baggage fee?

As a TPP flying in F there is a decent chance (but not certain) they won't mention the excess.

I see, I think I'll try to mention about the excess baggage when I call them to request the meet and assist service. Hopefully they can let it slide.
