    • Never flown SQ's A330, but I have flown CX (Back in 2009) and EK's A330 a couple of times, and SQ is lucky their A330s have the newest interiors, especially which fly to Chennai and a few other parts of India.

I wonder since they're returning the A330s to the lessor, until the A350's or 787s come, you think they'll start putting back regional 772 or 773's back to India (Like Chennai, Ahmedabad, etc)? I'm always used to having older interior aircraft on the second leg (After a long haul flight).

SQ is returning only the A330s with non-economically-renewable leases expiring (4 this fiscal year, 4 next year). It had two sets of orders - of 19 and 15 aircraft. With the last of the A330s delivered only last week, they won't disappear that quickly.

The 772s have more J seats and fewer Y seats compared to the A330s (38+228 vs 30+255). That would determine where they fly. In India, BLR, DEL and BOM still get the 772s I believe. The 773s have 50 J seats and 8 F seats, so they're used for regional routes with high premium demand (CGK tops it I think).

The first batch of 20 A350s will be configured with long-haul products and are initially supposed to replace the 772ERs.

So until the 78Js start arriving, the regional routes will be made up of a mix of different aircraft, with long haul planes thrown in as well. My wish is that SQ stops using the older planes on flights longer than 4 hours, but that doesn't seem to be the criteria.

I am actually quite curious what SQ will do with the 787. Passenger reaction to 9-abreast on the 787 has not been great (to say the least), but at the same time it would be a huge disadvantage to run it at 8-abreast (only JL does it today).

9-abreast on 787 is no worse than 10-abreast on 777 ...... but worse than any 737/A320 - so going 3-3-3 will be making SQ's seats narrower than Air Asia's short haul (Air Asia X is a totally different story with super narrow 3-3-3 on a A330)

But SQ has not gone 10-abreast on 777, so they may just do 2-4-2 on the 787. Otherwise, they will have the same seat width as Scoot..... with a bit more pitch.

JL sacrifices 15 seats on their 789 and about 10 seats on their 788s by going 8-abreast (44J 35S 116Y on the 789)

For now, I avoid 787s if I am flying Y unless it is JL

                • So, come Dec 31 2021, the SQ fleet may look like this:

60 A350-900s (all should be delivered assuming they receive 10-12 per year)
                  7 A350-900ULRs
30 B787-10s (maybe a few remaining to be delivered)

<27 B777-300ERs - the first batch of 19 (SWA-SWT) may be in the process of being withdrawn
<19 A380s - 5 new deliveries beginning 2017 will replace SKA-SKE, which will be returned to the lessor. SKF onwards may be in the process of being withdrawn

All 777-200 and 777-300 withdrawn. Maybe a handful (<10) A330s still in the fleet, more or less matching the few B787-10s to be delivered.

I don't think SQ will be in a hurry to retire the 77Ws. The resale value is already falling, and the refurbishment program now suggests that they will stick around for quite a bit longer. Ditto for the A380s.

Probably that explains why they're not in a rush to order replacements for 77Ws and 380s. They'll probably evaluate the performance of the A359s and maybe even up-gauge some of them to A35Ks. I can't see them needing 60 A359s plus 30 B78Js. I know the firm orders are for A359s, but these contracts can (and often are) renegotiated.

Not much disclosure on this. The most official source is SQ's annual report. See my earlier post:

AFAIK, all 31 A330s are leased, on a negotiable 5 year lease (some have been extended beyond 6 years, while some were returned at exactly 5 years).

5 A380s are leased (9V-SKA, 9V-SKB, 9V-SKC, 9V-SKD and 9V-SKE). The remaining 14 are owned by SQ. The incoming 5 A380s from 2017 onwards are supposedly replacing the first 5 leased birds.

At least 2 777-300s are leased (9V-SYK and another unknown bird).

                        At least 2 777-200ERs are leased (9V-SVH and 9V-SVO).

All remaining birds are owned by SQ.

Actually, 9 A388s are leased (3 with the all biz upper deck, 6 "normal") along with 3 77Ws. This is as at 31 March 2015, reported in SQ's annual report (link in an earlier posting).

                            Which are the mystery frames?

Alright extracted some info from the Annual Report.

                              SQ has:
                              • 1 leased refitted 777-200 (reg unknown), lease expiring FY2015/16
                              • 2 leased unrefitted 777-200ER (9V-SVH and 9V-SVO), lease expiring FY2015/16 and FY2016/17
                              • 2 leased refitted 777-300 (9V-SYK and reg unknown), lease expiring FY2015/16 and FY2016/17
                              • 3 leased 777-300ERs (reg unknown)
                              • 6 leased A380-800s with economy on upper deck (9V-SKA, SKB, SKC, SKD, SKE and reg unknown)
                              • 3 leased A380-800s with all business upper deck (reg unknown)
                              • 31 leased A330-300s, 3 leases expiring FY2015/16 and 4 leases expiring FY2016/17

That should clear things up a bit.

                                1. B787-10s may go to Scoot instead of staying at Singapore Airlines.
                                2. If (1) is the real case, SQ will end up with less than 113 aircraft. So almost zero growth in fleet for nearly a decade?

As B787-10s have yet to arrive for a good few years, we shall wait and see what impact it will have. The airline industry is growing fast and I predict SE Asia might be the next boom area alongside with India. I am doubtful if their current order will be enough to cater any future upside demand, but I am sure if this is the case, we might see more orders from something else coming soon.

Finally, as A350-900 comes in, I think the remaining 14 B777-200 should go by mid-2017. What will happen with B777-300 remains unknown, I suppose SQ still have the option to upsize them to A350-1000, but looks like at the moment they are only focused the first batch of 20, so perhaps it is the best to wait and see for further developments.
