I think SQ will eventually purchase a batch of around 20 777Xs to replace their 777-300ERs, while the A350-900s and 787-10s replace the A330-300s, 777-200s, 777-200ERs and 777-300s. If SQ places an order now, they should be receiving it from 2020-2021 onwards, and 9V-SWA will be 15 years old by then, just in time for retirement. Just my speculation though.

Perhaps we might get to see the new cabins revealed on the 777Xs since SQ seems to be on a 6-7 year cabin renewal cycle (apart from the 2015 PY and 2017 R and J cabins for the 5 incoming A380-800s).

Solid analysis FSJZ, but I think that SQ would be converting some A350-900's to A350-1000's and use the A35J's to replace the 77W's. My reason of thinking is because does SQ really need 70 A359's and 30 78J's to replace all the 772's, 77E's and A333's? I think it's an oversupply but I have no idea about SQ's fleet or expansion plans so I too am just guessing.

Just read on Australian Business Traveller that the first 20 A350-900s will be in a 3 class (2013 J, 2015 PY and 2013 Y) config, while subsequent ones will be in a 2 class (2013 J and 2013 Y) config, more suited for medium haul routes where premium economy demand is low.

As quoted from Mak, “These new generation planes will allow us to operate more economically to routes which are marginal at best with today’s fleet. So it’s both a replacement of the 777-200 on existing routes but it will also allow us to look at some possibilities which are not open now because of the (route) economics.”

So we might see the A350s not only replacing the old 777s, but also on new routes where demand is thinner, suitable for the lower seating capacity (probably ~250 seats) and better operating performance of the A350s. That might explain why SQ ordered an excess of these jets.

My take on SQ's fleet plan:

The first 20 359s will be configured with long haul seats and will replace the 772ERs and potentially open up new routes.

The next 20 359s be configured with regional J seats (time for a new version) and will replace the 772s and 773s.

The 787-10s, also in regional configuration, will replace the 333s.

[There may be some timing mismatch with some of the 333s exiting the fleet before the 787-10s arrive as their leases expire but this can be managed by retaining some of the 772s, 772ERs and 773s a little longer.]

So then it makes sense to convert the final 30 359 orders to 350-1000s to replace the older 77Ws (maybe even the entire fleet over time).

Of course, all speculation at this time but as noted by a poster above, it explains why SQ has not made any 777X orders.

In Straits Times report on 6 Jun 15, it was reported that SIA will return the earlier 5 A380s to its lessors from Oct 2017 onwards. Similiarly in the report it talks about how the market respond to used A380s coming on the secondhand market as MAS so far have leased 2 of its 6 A380s out, and reportedly Thai is said to be attempting to sell of its 6 A380s and these are only about 3 years old. And there's 2 skymark A380s that have yet to be sold by airbus.

Yes Airbus is concerned about sales of the A380 stagnating. The last order for an A380 from a new customer was more than 2 years ago. Seems like it will have the same fate as the 747-8 programme. Most airlines nowadays prefer smaller more economical jets that fly from point to point (Boeing's approach) rather than hubs and spokes (Airbus' approach).

Turkish Airlines said it was considering to lease 2 birds from MAS to try out the aircraft, but it is not confirmed yet.

looks more like Russia's Transmero - as they have mentioned starting A380 services soon.

Transaero ordered their A380s from Airbus.

While on the topic of A380's, a friend of mine who works for SQ told me that the airline may consider the Boeing 777X as A380 replacements in the future. To be honest, I don't think and certainly hope it will not happen, but does anyone have further info on this?

SQ released its 2014/5 Annual Report today:
                                http://infopub.sgx.com/FileOpen/SIAA...&FileID=358183

Page 210 provides details on its fleet, especially on lease expiry. Looks like in fiscal year 2016/7 (Apr 2016 - Mar 2017), 4 A330s + 1 773 + 1 772ER will exit as leases expire. What is not clear is how many of the older owned aircraft will be retired during the period.

I really am hoping that the posts in another thread that 19 older planes will see an upgrade of IFE and Y-class seats taken from 77Ws being refurbished are true. I flew SIN-IST-SIN recently on SVx aircraft; and the IFE experience was painful.
