The GSM signals in that country must've been very strong to have reached the plane 10km in the sky flying at 900+kph!
I've done that over Afghanistan as well. Didn't see it for a few days either then saw sms 'T Mobile : Welcome to Afghanistan'.

Apparently a few places are still not getting with the programme such as Brazil, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea and Taiwan so you will get the old message, and people will still switch their phones on anyway like they already do.

I've been hit once with something like this when I was en-route to PVG. SingTel waived it off though

I heard the announcement when I arrived in SYD 2-weeks ago. The aircraft was taxiing to the terminal.

Same on my flight from NRT to SIN this week. I did have the "pleasure" of traveling UA Y just last week long haul and they did announce that phones could be used after landing.

Slighlty OT, while I'm not a huge UA fan I have to say the updated IFE on their 777s is quite decent and it works from the moment you sit down in your seat until the moment you dock at the gate similar to QR and others. Take a note from that book SQ. Coming in from NRT they announced to shut down personal electronic devices, turning off Krisworld and to put the seat back upright exactly 48mins before touch down just after the captain had come on. Bloody ridiculous.

45 mins to go, and they do it just to save themselves some trouble at the end. Overkill. OVERKILL. I'm not asking for end-to-end IFE, just start collecting headsets at T-30/25 and for those who have their own headsets, switch off the IFE at T-15. Or change it to Flight Path at T-15. Really boring to expect us (esp those that don't have windows to look at clouds/an empty sea) to just read the same magazine, especially if it's the 8th flight that month or to bring our own magazine...

(technically this should be in the IFE-not-end-to-end thread)

I agree SQ's IFE and headphones policy is bizarre, especially as more airlines seem to be announcing gate to gate IFE.

On SQ you can't use IFE and headphones on landing but you can use your phone.

In all fairness, the phones are allowed only after you've landed on the runway... they probably can justify that you've landed safely already anyway...
