  • MEL goes 4 Daily !

MEL goes x4 Daily! The new service will be operated by A330's, MEL now sees the exact same service SYD does with SQ. Does this impact's Scoot's entry into MEL? QF will go stand alone MEL-SIN in March next year using 747's.

From 01JUL13, Singapore Airlines introduces 4th daily Singapore – Melbourne SQ207/208 service, on board Airbus A330-300 aircraft. SQ last used flight number pair SQ207/208 in March 1989 for Singapore – Jakarta service.

    SQ207 SIN0735 – 1655MEL 333 D
    SQ217 SIN0955 – 1915MEL 388 D
    SQ227 SIN2100 – 0620+1MEL 388 D
    SQ237 SIN2355 – 0915+1MEL 773 D

    SQ218 MEL0005 – 0605SIN 388 D
    SQ238 MEL1025 – 1615SIN 773 D
    SQ228 MEL1545 – 2145SIN 388 D
    SQ208 MEL1810 – 0005+1SIN 333 D

SQ and Scoot are targeting different markets, so I doubt this new frequency affects the latter's loads.

This is so exciting and not before time!

SQ will be picking up the former QF passengers on the "Kangeroo Route" who do not want to switch over to transiting through Dubai.

These new timings are the perfect addition to adding more MEL-Europe connections as well as other destinations such as India.

SQ207 means there's no more need on the way home to wait 4+ hours in SIN when arriving on one of the earlier flights from Europe (AMS, ZRH, FCO, CPH, some MXP/BCN) as well as DEL and BOM flights. It also means getting into MEL at a much better hour for visitors.

SQ208 means being able to leave MEL later and have faster connections at SIN to a lot of the same places in Europe. They allow 55 min connections off Sydney's SQ242 to places like FCO, PVG or around 70 min to ZRH, KIX, but I don't think I'd want the stress of what might happen if there was any delay.

MEL was singled out as the next Australian destination according to Wilson, CEO of Scoot, however its not certain yet, TZ are awaiting for more 772's from SQ due to arrive next year.

It would be really interesting to see if Avalon (AVV) could ever lure an international airline other than JQ if they ever become an "International Airport". Can't see it happening myself, but our state and federal governments seem keen on pushing the idea. TZ is the kind of carrier they need to attract if they ever have a hope of realising this dream.

There's been an update to the operational craft.

With the introduction of the fourth daily flight, SQ 217/8 reverts to 77W. Seems to be tied up with the LHR operational changes.

                    Singapore – Melbourne
eff 30JUN13 SQ217/218 operates with 777-300ER, instead of A380 (SQ218 from 01JUL13. This adjustment is made around 1500hrs GMT)
eff 01JUL13 Service increases from 3 to 4 daily (NEW SQ207/208 service)
                    SQ207 SIN0735 – 1655MEL 333 D

Hmmm... If they replaced our 773 refit on 237/8 with a 772 (preferably a 772ER), we would actually achieve that goal!

I believe SQ would bring back the 2nd daily A380 service somewhere around OCT 2013, if the 4th flight proves to be successful, or to simply add to extra demand. But I think some are pretty happy to see SQ217/218 to go back to 77W.

While we're at it, an SQ A345 please !
