  • Turbulence over the Bay of Bengal

Is it just me or is the turbulence getting worse over there??! 4 flights this month to Manchester UK and each time the plane has taken a battering. I know what they say about it not effecting the plane safety but its never nice especially when the cabin crew are strapped in next to you in the business seats.

    Thoughts anyone?

This is the worst time of year with it being Monsoon season.

I will be flying across it on Friday so I guess I had better be prepared for some bumps

actually when is the "best" time to fly. I always thought Summer time is the better time to
travel compare to Winter. But I have noticed over the past few year, Summer time actually is quite bad as many typhoon developing....

      Am I right?

Good in my definition is less (or no) turbulance

And then what? We'll have Titanic-threatening icebergs in the Sunda Straits?

Of course I know where is Bay of Bengal. It is between the Indian Sub Continent and South East Asia.

There was pretty bad turbulence over the Bay of Bengal last night. Had to stop drinking champagne for a while as the crew had to sit down and couldn't serve any.

But there are no typhoons in the Bay of Bengal. Just cyclones.

I just did a BOM-GOI-BOM. Lots of rain from thr monsoon, almost not stop, but the turbulence wasn't too bad. But when I did the SIN-BOM last Sunday, the turbulence started over the Andaman islands but it wasn't the worse I have felt.

If you are fortunate enough to get yourself asleep on the Europe-BKK/SIN flights and you are woken by turbulance you can normally guess you have reached the Bay of Bengal.

I have had a few fun transits through there over the years.

Ugh whenever I have to fly over the infamous Bay of Bengal I know that there almost always will be some chop, and that means sometimes you can't get food for quite a while. ANY time of the year is fair game and in fact one of my worst experiences ever was in november many years ago. The plane shook violently, a few bags fell out of the overhead bins and the food cart in my aisle rolled up and down. The ordeal lasted almost an hour but no one was injured thankfully.

That said I tend to experience much less if any turbulence when flying from december to april when there is no monsoon.

IIRC there might have been some threads on Flyertalk and airliners.net devoted to this topic.

Smooth as a baby's bum on SQ318 yesterday.

I've never had it bad over the Bay of Bengal and I'm a regular on SQ318 and 322.

I normally get problems over Eastern Europe on that route and normally it gets quite violent. Once on 322 I did as one does when in Y to sleep and got a bit drunk in the lounge and then a bit more on the plane. After I had finished my meal I put it in the gallery and took out my contact lenses ready to sleep when suddenly we hit a huge area of turbulence over I think Romania and the stewardess pushing the trolley flew up in the air along with the trolley and she flew into me and landed on my lap as I was in an exit row...although a bit winded I can think of worse things to happen as a 21 year old male who was a bit drunk!! A lot of people walking around fell over and rushed to the seats but as far as I could tell no injuries.

After that however it got bad for about half an hour and I ended up with the person next to me spilling their wine on me....an entertaining flight!

It doesn't 'work' going North, only South.
