This is good news. Unfortunately I might be back in Singapore by then and won't get to use this service that much.

And I hope they won't serve supper and a continental breakfast but a snack and full breakfast.

      • I was expecting this, although upgauging SQ227/8 to an A380 was the other solution.

I think this is the result of SQ227/8 going 77WR and I expect to see SQ207/8 go A350 some time in the next 6 months. That spells a significant shortfall in Y capacity, which these new flights will go some way in addressing, along with SQ217/8 going permanent A380.

I do hope that 207/208 does go to A350. The fares on 208 are much cheaper. But with the introduction of the A350, economy seat count reduces, and fares will still go up. Tickets out of Melbourne aren't cheap so hopefully with the new flight, ticket prices will still be affordable.

On a side note SYD will see up to 5 daily on certain days and BNE to get 4 daily.

Very true- including SQ228 in your itinerary usually comes at quite a cost. I no longer fly my username as much as I used to because of it. SQ207/8 is a fantastic flight timing and much better price usually, but that ancient 772 is the downside. I was very happy with it as an A330 with the 2006 Y product, although they had a lot of trouble keeping to schedule, which is a problem for onward connections when arriving at 0020. The A330 just can't catch up those extra 20 minutes when delayed and pointed into a headwind.

Now I'm hoping that having paid 772 prices, it may transform into an A350 before my flight in June! I've accepted my fate of an old 772 in January...

            • I usually purchase and use the wifi for flights of at least 3 hours or more to catch up mainly on work and worl related emails etc. The only issue with the A330 is that they are not equipped with wifi and its a shame really. Just went to Seoul and return on the A330, and wifi-less for the 6 hour flight.

              • Time to revive the thread...

                http://www.routesonline.com/news/38/...craft-changes/

The text of the above linked post is incorrect. SQ217/8 can't "once again" receive the A350 as it's never had it before. Only SQ207/8 has ever been served by the A350.

Where does the A380 have to go that's so important? F must be really weak on MEL flights as it's now going down to 12 seats per day, most of which will be on SQ237/8.

But even with D Check shouldn't they should replace with a slightly larger aircraft such as B777-300 or B777-300ER?

I can't book economy seats on SQ218 in June, if they can't get a larger aircraft they should commence SQ 247/248 earlier so that passengers will be able to book it.

                    • They might be able to get away with an A350 in May perhaps but by the end of June even an A380 is filling up, especially SQ217 around weekends. I fly SQ207 and SQ217 enough to know and there's never a spare seat to be seen in Y.

And that's why I can't book an economy seat on SQ 218 in late June!

It is just March and they have sold out economy on that flight, seriously something needs to be done to accommodate passengers.

I hear you. It's like we've gone back in time to 2012 when we got three flights a day, whole months booked out half a year away.

The they added SQ207 and there were two morning flights out of SIN. Took a year to really catch on but then both flights filled up. MEL has given a lot of love to SQ and this is what we get in return.

                          • More messing around with MEL:

Singapore Airlines on Monday (06MAR17) made additional changes to planned Singapore – Melbourne service. From 01APR17, 3 of 7 weekly SQ207/208 service will be operated by Airbus A350-900XWB aircraft, instead of 777-200ER. With this change, the A350 will be operating this route for entire Northern summer season.

Seriously I think SQ 247 and 248 should be upgraded to daily if they continuously to deploy the low capacity A350 or else we won't be able to book economy seats on SQ from Melbourne!

I'm thoroughly confused now and also angry that the flight the day before and the day after mine are going A350 but mine will still be 772!

I think the confusion is that routesonline have listed SQ247/8 as though it is current as of 1 April, but it is not.

I'm still holding out for this to go daily soon though...

I feel you. Especially when you are flying in a far more inferior product in Y when you have gotten something better. With any luck you might end up in SVB. Hopefully that will be a consolation.

247/248 will eventually become daily or at least 5 weekly at some point. But probably not that soon after its launch.
