  • Upgrade on Check In

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone knows if SQ ever offer discounted upgrades for unsold seats when checking in?

    Thanks,
    Rob

Nope, you still pay the fare difference between your ticket and the upgraded seat.

never with SQ, but sometimes when I ask for priority luggage tag they will give,
CX and GA often upgrade their pax including me a few times

Unlike many American Airlines and some Asian ones, I've only observed that SQ will bump pax up if there is an over-booking situation or for some operational issue. SQ guards its premium classes jealously - you need to pay to get a seat - otherwise they fear many will not book them in the hope to get in on a discounted/free basis.

I disagree entirely with any free upgrades (bar exceptional circumstances) makes a mockery of the poor folk who have paid the $$$$$$$ for the same kind of seat in which some lucky person is now sitting in!

I have a few times gone to the ticket desk prior to check-in, and have asked if I can pay for an upgrade to biz class. Each time they have told me I cannot. One time it was clear that they still had unsold seats as I could see into the biz class cabin from Econ. That p*ssed me off as when I have flown Thai they have sold me a "stand by" biz class ticket for unsold biz seats.

It can make sense to offer cheaper upgrades at the airport if the premium cabin is very empty. Some carriers target non-status members for that to induce them to book the more expensive cabin in the future.

It could be that a one-off/twice-a-year passenger has paid premium for the F/J seat but let's say the regional flier, more often than not in Y, flying every week or two and with Gold status or higher is of higher overall worth to the airline...... it doesn't make sense to reward loyalty once in a while?

If it makes you feel better, you'll have more chances of picking up a gold bar on the streets than being upgraded on SQ.

SQ is very difficult to get upgraded.Been flying for more than 6 years, only got upgraded once. Remembered that it was Chennai back to Singapore when it was overbooked.

Other than that...no chance at all.

There are already many who realise that its not as good anymore and book flights elsewhere.

In general, if you want to fly in J cabin, then pay for it fair and square (or redeem it).
