Zurich-bound A380 forced to land in Frankfurt

GENEVA: A Zurich-bound Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 reportedly carrying Formula 1 racer Sebastian Vettel was forced to land in Frankfurt before arriving at its destination three hours late on Wednesday.

Skyguide, which manages air traffic, said the delay was due to a problem onboard the super jumbo jet while a Singapore Airlines spokeswoman told Swiss newswire ATS that it was due to thick fog which covered Zurich airport at the scheduled landing time.

While approaching Zurich airport at around 8 a.m, the pilot suddenly interrupted the manoeuvre and regained altitude.

The aircraft then headed to Frankfurt before taking off again for Switzerland. It finally landed in Zurich at 11.30 a.m.

Problems with Rolls Royce engines in A380 aircraft -- the world's biggest passenger plane -- came to light after a Qantas superjumbo made an emergency landing in Singapore in November last year because of a mid-air engine explosion.

In late July, Singapore Airlines said an A380 bound for Hong Kong was forced to return to the city state after one of its engines shut down.

Was of the impression F1 racers flew on private jets during races.

I've heard that F on a good commercial airliner (esp. something like SQ R) would be more comfortable than smaller private jets for longhaul flights, even if the private jet can do the journey non-stop (e.g. G-V)... It's only when you approach the size of BBJ that you see a marked improvement in pure comfort factor.

Of course, everything else - food, service, convenience, etc - will still be better on any private jet.
