  • Which side to sit?

    Hi

I'm booked to fly biz in Oct to Rome on a 777-200ER. Currently the seats booked is 15A and 15C.

If I want to catch sun rise do I move to H and K? Sorry it's quite a silly question but last time I took an overnight plane to Seoul I missed the sunrise

    Thanks in advance!

I also think should be right hand side as if you are flying from SIN to Rome, the east where the sunrise should be on the right hand side.

Don't landing directiosn from FCO ATC have a say in how the plane lands?

Or do they mean the general direction the aircraft will be flying? Apologies if I'm wrong..

Try the flight deck, should give you a direkt view

Ok, I would say H,K seats should be the better option.

Yes - what the op means is the general direction when the aircraft is in cruising altitude, nothing to do with landing.

Let's see, Rome is northwest of Singapore, therefore the plane will be flying in a northwesterly direction. The sun should rise in the east, therefore you should sit on which side?

Your best chances are on the right side of the aircraft. Unless the sun rises around the time of landing when there is no way of telling at this point in time.

Let me go do some calculations and come back..... the flight will be October...Sun' declination will be North, though not much north by then, ....... In Oct, average snrise in that EU region will be about 6 am......

Ok, I will punch some numbers and get back to you.
                        .

Very interesting question indeed. Let me try and take a stab at this.

Firstly the route to Rome; assuming the plane is flying the great circle route, it will be heading in the general direction of 311.7deg from Singapore (another assumption). And assuming you are on SQ 366, it's ETA is 0735. At this time of the year, sunrise at that latitude is at approximately 0500GMT, which is approximately 0600 Italian standard time, at 2deg south (if I'm reading the charts properly).

Therefore my estimate (assuming it's correct!) will place you around Greece at sunrise, with the sun rising on the left but almost to the aft of the plane.

Good luck to your sunrise! Hopefully the port wing will not block it.

ehm, but my flight is departing at 0105. so the sunrise would be a lot later no?

i've never flown to italy/rome or seen any sunrise from the plane (Except for that missed one in seoul!!) so i really don't have a clue on this.

Hi Bubbles, yes your flight is leaving at 0105 Singapore time i.e. 1905 Italian time the previous day (minus 6hrs). As mentioned, sunrise is approximately 0600 Italian time at that latitude in October.

However, I forgot to factor in the fact that you will be approximately 35,000ft above sea level, hence sunrise with respect to the plane will be much earlier than 0600 (which is calculated at sea level). I have not gone through the exact calculations but sunrise could be about 30mins earlier, just my finger in the air estimate. So I would recommend that you have your window shade up even before the crew start serving breakfast.

In the event you miss it, don't worry. The sunrises in Italy are equally beautiful especially in the countryside.
