  • A380 KrisWorld with tail camera?

I refer to the comment in this photo:

    http://www.airliners.net/photo/Singa...841/1914439/L/

    in which the photographer comments:

You can also see the tail camera used in the Krisworld Enterntainment System giving the passengers a fabulous outside view of the whole aircraft.
Never heard of such a feature on SQ A380s before. Is this a new addition or is the photographer mistaken?

Nope, it's probably a mistake... unless something has changed in the last month. The functionality to do it is apparently in the IFE though, just not enabled by SQ.

Well i think the photographer is mistaken. The camera is only available to the pilots in the flight deck. It cannot be seen through as a passenger.

I think you can do it on EK maybe they are mistaken.

Does SQ disable the function for passengers for security reasons?

It seems like SQ is the only one without onboard camera's. Even their 773/77W doesn't have the onboard camera available to the passengers. But I do know that the pilot is able to see the camera.

Maybe Changi Airport made them do so in the name of security...

Then what about CX's 773 nose wheel cams?

Yes it is in the IFE software, but is not enabled and if you do turn it on you just get a blank screen with some thing like camera view printed on the top left. So I don`t think the camera is connected up to the IFE.

Here is an example. This shows that it's not because changi airport that SQ doesn't have the onboard camera.

A380, A346 and B773 are built with an onboard camera to aid the pilots when they taxi the ac due to their large size. There's two on the Horizontal stabiliser, one on the vertical fin and one just aft of the nose gear on the Airbus. Boeing doesn't include the one on the vertical fin. The A380 on QF and EK, AFAIK, get this view from this external camera which AIrbus calls ETACS onto their IFE. Boeing, on the other hand, gets this view from a purpose built camera which is installed right behind the front bulkhead. Certain airlines A330 also get this view from this purpose built camera. Btw, while A calls it ETACS, B calls it GMCS, if i can recall correctly.

It would be nice if SQ switched them on. It can be quite amusing watching people when they are watching the screens. A few weeks ago while on short finals to DPS on a TG 777 a few in the cabin were getting twitchy when we were banking left and right to try and line up.
