  • 747 vs 77W First Class

Hi, I am flying Singapore - Melbourne and am trying to decide whether to fly First Class on the 747 or the 77W. I know the 77W has the new first class but the 747 flight time is much more suitable. Given that no savers are available on the 747 the points will be the same (Standard Reward). Will I be dissapointed with the 747? What are the seats and inflight entertainment like?
Any other information/opinoons etc would be much appreciated.

Compared to the 77W, yes. Seats are bumpy, old, and just plain crap. IFE has an extra step to play/preview. Screens are all scratched up. Don't get me started on the sinks.

Then again, I severely hate that aging POS with a passion and can't wait for them to get rid of them.

Normally I'd say schedule wins. But I entirely concur with HUGE AL, the 747s should have been made into something useful like beer cans a long time ago.

Ignore those two above, they are talking nonsense.

Last week I did FRA-SIN in F on the 744 and SIN-BCN-GRU in F on the 77W and give me that 744 cabin over the 77W all day Monday to Friday and twice on Saturday and Sunday.

Yes the IFE is nowhere near as good - that's SQ's fault for not updating it, how long has the 77W been in service now ? - but the cabin itself looks and feels like an proper F cabin whereas the 77W F cabin just looks and feels like Business Class. In fact it has an identical cabin immediately behind it, also with two rows of 1-2-1 and manually folding seats. Manually folding seats, in a First Class cabin ?. Come on. Even the antique regional birds have electronic F seats!.

The 77W just gives the impression they almost forgot about the F cabin : 'Oh sh*t, we've nearly run out of space, where we gonna put F on this thing ?.', 'Err...I know, we can squeeze it in here between the front galley and the mini J cabin'.

I can confirm my screen on the 744 was not scratched but can't comment on the sinks, as I don't spend enough time in the bathroom to worry about it.

*HUGE AL and I have discussed this before....

            I'm with MAN Flyer here

Nonstop flight, I'd take 744 F over the rest of the fleet

No scratches on our IFE screens either.

In addition, consider the date on which those two posts were made.............

Another vote for the 747. The F seat in the 77W is the worst F seat for sitting in that I have experienced of any airline it is like sitting on a park bench. I get the distinct feeling it was designed by marketeers and all they cared about was being able to say it is the widest F seat in the world but they totally forgot about comfort.

Totally agree - the lack of Skysuites-like padding means the metal bar in the lower back area of the seat totally blows about an hour into an F flight for me...

And I bet they're not going to re-design the seats for a long time yet, so lesser motivation to book/redeem anything more than a J seat here on SQ here unless hoping for an F booking grandfathered to R...

The 747's cabin is evergreen. If SQ updated the IFE/screen, it'd still be the hands-down winner for me.

Even though it is the widest of any F seat, i think it is definitely the one with the smallest seat pitch among any major airline's new long-haul F seat.

I totally agree, and the marketing people still do have a say and even though the 'class beyond first' nonsense that used to accompany First on the 380 has quietly been dropped, they still use the tagline for F on 77W.

Maybe it should be known as the 'class just beyond the forward J cabin and before the front galley'.

                        +1.

744 F cabin + 77W IFE system would mean it is still be one of the best F products around.

StarG and I were discussing this on the GRU inaugural last week and agreed that if you are in row 11 on the 77W then there is not much need to be in F. Of course the fact that the forward J cabin on the 77W is so good doesn't help First on that bird. And how much do they want to upgrade J to F ?.

                        Great for inaugurals though.

To be fair to the New First and New Business Class, mid-life improvements have been instituted.

I can't speak for the improved New F, but I did try the improved J.
                            • It's all leather instead of cloth
                            • It has thicker cushioning
                            • They provide a square leather pillow as an armrest a la F

Better but no cigar. I'd like a fully automatic seat as I'm too lazy to get up and flip into a bed

I have no problem whatsoever with J on the 77W and A380 (I can no longer call it 'New' because it no longer is, now being 4 years old... ), it's a great product, especially the mini cabin on the 77W which is as good a J seat/cabin as you'll find anywhere imo.

                              It's just F.....
