Channel NewsAsia and Singapore Airlines Introduce Scrolling News Headlines On Inflight Entertainment System

Singapore, 30 March 2011 – Regional news channel, Channel NewsAsia, has embarked on a partnership with Singapore Airlines (SIA) to provide text news headlines for customers on board SIA flights. Flights equipped with the latest Panasonic eX2™ system on KrisWorld, SIA’s award-winning inflight entertainment system, will feature the latest news updates in the form of scrolling headlines, provided by Channel NewsAsia.

The new service will provide SIA customers with up-to-the-minute news through scrolling headline text, more commonly termed “news tickers”. News from popular categories such as Asia Pacific, Singapore, Business, Sports and Entertainment will be relayed to SIA’s inflight entertainment screens from the website, channelnewsasia.com, while the international news reports will be provided by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Mr Philip Koh, Managing Director of MediaCorp’s Interactive Media Division, said, “We are pleased to partner Singapore Airlines and be the first to offer SIA passengers real-time news headlines from channelnewsasia.com. The days of passengers being shut off from live events when on the plane, will soon be a thing of the past. In time to come, we hope to offer even more value-added services from our award-winning news website.”

This is the first time that SIA is offering an in-flight news ticker service on its flights.

“The ticker tape news service is a step towards offering more value-added services to meet the needs of our customers. On top of KrisWorld’s already extensive selection of entertainment options, we wanted to provide content which would keep our customers updated with real-world information as they are flying with us. We are excited to be the first airline partner of Channel NewsAsia, one of the most established broadcasting companies in the region,” said Mr Tan Pee Teck, Singapore Airlines’ Senior Vice President Product and Services.

SIA will launch the news ticker service on its 19 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft before extending it to its Airbus A340-500, A330 and A380 fleets to benefit more customers.

I think this was featured on the inaugural SQ 68 plane.
However, MAN Flyer's monitor had it but not mine.

      It was indeed.

I am sure you remember me saying to you 'WTF is this ?' as you were stood in front of my seat.

It was very slow, and mainly about PAP candidates IIRC.

Saw that on SQ319 19/3 as well. It was turned on by an accident, but nothing was mentioned on Krisworld magazine about it and I brushed it off thinking it was some hidden feature.
Personally I find it quite irritating.
