  • You can now pay SQ with PayPal!

Check in with Singapore Airlines, check out with PayPal

    01 March 2011

Singapore Airlines customers in the US, Singapore and five other Asia Pacific countries and territories1 can now pay for their flights with PayPal on singaporeair.com. This facility will progressively be made available to the Airline’s customers in up to 17 countries, making this the largest collaboration between PayPal and an Asian carrier to date.
After booking Singapore Airlines flights online, travellers can now pay for tickets using their PayPal account in as few as three clicks and without the need to retype their credit card or financial details.

A year-long global marketing campaign will be launched to celebrate the collaboration between Singapore Airlines and PayPal. The first marketing promotion allows travellers in the initial launch markets who pay for their Singapore Airlines flight with PayPal the chance to win back the price of their flight (up to S$2,000). One lucky winner will be selected daily from 7 March 2011 to 6 April 2011. For more details of this marketing promotion, please visit www.paypal.com/sg/sia.

“In our continuous search for more payment options for our customers, we are very happy to be able to add PayPal to our offerings. With PayPal, our customers will be able to benefit from another secure payment option and enjoy a hassle-free express checkout experience,” said Mr Tan Chik Quee, Singapore Airlines’ Senior Vice-President Marketing.

Mr Tan continued: “Matching the global nature of our business, PayPal’s online payment platform with over 94 million active users in 190 markets and 24 currencies will enable us to reach out to more travellers on all six continents in our network.”

“We’re so excited to add Singapore Airlines, one of the most admired carriers in the world, to our growing stable of airlines in the region that are leveraging on our global e-commerce platform to expand their reach to travellers worldwide,” said Mr Farhad Irani, Vice-President and General Manager of PayPal Asia Pacific.

Mr Irani commented further: “Our two global companies share the same goal for faster and safer ways to pay for tickets online, thus our collaboration is another manifestation of delivering choice, convenience and value to consumers across Asia Pacific and the world.”

Besides using their online balance, PayPal users can pay for their Singapore Airlines flights from their bank accounts, credit cards or debit cards that are linked to their PayPal account2 . In addition, PayPal never shares its users’ financial information, thereby increasing the security of the online transaction and protecting the privacy of its users.

      Paypal = Ebay = Evil

They already have way too much power and money and I would never use this feature.

I wonder what fee SQ get stung by Paypay when a customer uses this feature

If I'm not wrong, Paypal fees are actually less than what they charge credit card companies.

Plus Paypal for consumers are actually better because you don't actually reveal your credit card number/bank details to anyone but Paypal. Having said that, that means you ARE putting your trust in Paypal.

SQ unlike QANTAS and some other airlines does not charge credit card fees. I would imagine Paypal keeps a database on their customers.

I love my KF miles so staying with Krisflyer Westpac AMEX card that provides 3 points for every AUD$1 spent booking SQ flights.

PayPal is plenty secure. More so than the waiter that takes your credit card at a restaurant.

Will ensure I use the card for my next SQ ticket purchase.

Normally I use my other Amex cards

SQ do charge CC fees sorry to say... not in every market but in Australia where you are based Gunners its AUD30 per ticket. shows up as a 'YR' tax in the calculation. If you book with an agent and pay cash you should not have to pay this $30 fee which comes up automatically in the fare calculation but can be manually removed by the agent. They charge it in a very sly way hidden in the taxes.

I will be wary of this option as I might not:

                  1. Receive the free insurance coverage offered by most credit cards (though this usually covers on-board or flight related matters)

                  2. Get bonus miles offered by some credit cards for airfare booking such as Maybank's Horizon card

Can anyone confirm otherwise that we can use Paypal but still enjoy any benefits that certain card issuers give for airtix purchase?

The only value for passengers would be the fact that there is no need for you to insert your credit card number to SQ. The value for SQ, however, is probably the lower charges

So your question is...? Can I not use my credit card, and still receive the benefits of having used the card?

Haha, what I meant was that typically, banks will give you the bonus miles or privileges to a promotion based on the merchant code for the transaction. Hence, if you charge directly to your card on Singaporeair.com, the merchant will be SQ itself, hence eligible for the benefits.

However, if you pay via Paypal, the merchant becomes Paypal (correct me if I'm wrong though), and banks can choose not to honour any benefits even though you may be purchasing airtix through Paypal.

                          Thanks sqdazz.

I guess they are a little sneaky, I have never noticed. Still like earning triple points on Amex for SQ flights. Hopeful they did not replace A330s to Brisbane and therefore lose J saver rewards.

In Australia credit card travel insurance is generally not worth anything. There is a generally a better chance for it to snow in Singapore than for a credit card company to pay out on travel insurance. Check out

                              1. Generally the credit card companies only require that you use your card towards some/all your travel costs. It shouldn't matter who the merchant is. You don't even have to use your card for any travel cost to attract insurance coverage with some cards (eg AMEX Platinum charge card in Australia). Check your credit card company's T&Cs.

                              2. Don't think so. Once again, check your credit card company's T&Cs.
