  • Need a J class trip LHR-JNB, cant decide which airline !

Need a couple of days in RSA, JNB for a day, then onto CPT for one night, then home again. Main criteria is comfort and the ability to sleep

Im happy to make own way to CPT and back, but the return ot JNB varies from £1100 to £4500 !!!

choices are (in order of cost, lowest)

MS : Dont really fancy the DRY airline with bad reviews
LH : Good flight times, but NO flat bed
    LX : Ditto
AF/LKM : No *A Miles (and no flat beds)
SAA : Flat beds but double the cost of LH/LX
    VS/BA : Stoopidly expensive

Which would you choose from LH/LX/MS/AF given the above, bearing in mind sleep is major factor !!!!

    TIA for your help

LH is the best deal - go for them.

        ...also TP for *A miles

If flat bed is important, then Etihad, and I think it is also starting flights to CPT

Given the options listed, I would go for LX.

            Interesting

So after liaising with clients/flights, i have found my self with little option other than to go for LH.

Timings for all the Etihad/TP/Other flights just didnt work , the LH flight gets me into JNB early enought to do a days work, and still get to cape town for dinner, and leaves late enough following day to get a day in CPT too..

Will be first time in LH J, but having done the LX trip a few times, will be nice to get a comparison !

Alos, due to choosing LH, i can leave from BHX (my nearest airport) and save myself 2 hours drive !!

Thanks for all your help guys, wait for next question :

"Whats 12k both ways on LH 744 like ??, and whats this i hear about frequent Opups for *G ?? "

Leaving BHX is a big advantage - well, tbh, anything that avoids London is good - so definitely a plus for LH

12K is in the second cabin, I think - it's a bit of a dormitary there, and quite a squeeze - you should see if you can get a seat in the nose area

As for op-ups, they are getting more frequent on LH, as they are adopting the CX policy of heavily overbooking Y in these troubled times. However, you're going to be in line behind a bunch of HONs and SENs, as well F&Fs... Yup, judging by my previous trips in C, the South African routes are very much the LH Friends & Family Express - German airline staff, it would seem, love a little safari, as do their wives and children. They'll be the ones with the best seats and most attentive service

What with the op-ups and F&F, I would definitely try and reserve a nose seat now if you can - you really don't want to be in the second C cabin when it's full

Flew 3 months ago on LH in biz to JNB and cabin was oversold by more than 50 pax! They had to upgrade 30 pax from Y to C and a couple of C to F. Plane was full! Meal service is very quick since it's a night flight so you get a good night's sleep. Right after dinner I felt asleep and woke up 20min before landing. Very relaxed! I stayed in JNB for one night only and flew back on a Sunday evening on a half empty plane...

The crew on the outbound however was a bit lazy. I had much better LH crews before and after that flight.
