  • Jetstar to participate in oneworld fares

Certainly plugs some holes in the oneworld network, but I'm not going to waste a DONEx, or similar, sector on a Jetstar flight.

And interesting implications for the 'quality alliance' branding. Maybe oneworld should set up a new membership category for JQ and AB - LCC affiliates.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/worl...world-alliance

Asia Pacific budget carrier Jetstar is aiming to grow its Asian business by at least 30 per cent this year and is looking to open routes to Europe and North America when it takes delivery of the long-delayed Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 2012.

The move would put the Melbourne-based Qantas affiliate, which has an Asian hub in Singapore, in competition with Malaysia's Air Asia X and potentially with some established long-haul full service carriers such as Singapore Airlines.

Jetstar group CEO Bruce Buchanan said that the company will also join Oneworld alliance, which will put it in the same team as Qantas, Cathay Pacific, British Airways and Japan Airlines.

I'm not so sure this is correct. They announced a co-operation with regards to airfares yes, but only this one article seems to say they are joining oneworld. I wonder whether the writer got it confused.

Press release from JQ herE: http://www.jetstar.com/~/media/files.../20110127b.pdf

After I posted that, and following yesterday's news that JQ was participating in oneworld fare products yesterday, I did wonder if the writer got it wrong after all. And usually oneworld puts out a press release with each new member they announce... no such press release in this instance.

I think the author has it wrong.

I'd be most pleased if they had it right, however, as I find Jetstar one of the most reliable/reasonable-timings carrier ex-SIN without taking a hammer to the piggy bank for most of my regional routes.

Could it be true? Why would OW want an LCC?

They have already announced that AB (an LCC from Germany) will join, so this would not be new ground. But I did wonder the same when I heard it.

And EI was effectively a LCC when it was part of OW (and subsequently decided to leave) a few years ago.

Based on my experiences with AB, I wouldn't call it an LCC. There are free baggage allowances; they have an FFP where elite status accords extra baggage, priority checkin and boarding, elite bonuses, etc.; and there is a free meal for intra-Europe flights that sometimes beats what the Big 3 offer on their flights. The prices for their domestic flights aren't exactly low, either.

OW's image will only get worse if it invites an LCC IMO

It's just a bad article. They are just cooperating on fares

Still no mention of oneworld membership on the OW website so I can only presume stuff.co.nz is wrong.

Have changed the thread title. Announcement of JQ's participation in oneworld fares here:

                      http://www.oneworld.com/ow/news/details?objectID=24347

From 1 February, flights operated by the Australia-based Jetstar (JQ) and sold under its code-share arrangement with oneworld member Qantas (QF) will be available through the market-leading oneworld Explorer round-the-world fare and oneworld Circle Pacific, Circle Asia and South West Pacific and Circle Trip Explorer multi-continent packages. Qantas code-shares on virtually every Jetstar flight, so this arrangement covers almost the full schedule of Jetstar Australia and New Zealand operations.

Jetstar already participates in Global Explorer, the round-the-world fare offered by all oneworld partners with a number of other airlines that are not members of the alliance, and also in the alliance's Visit Australia and New Zealand pass - but today's development is the first time that any carrier which is not part of oneworld is being added to the alliance's own oneworld-branded mainstream fare packages.

                      ...

                      Notes

1 While, the link-up means flights on Jetstar can be combinable with sectors on all 12 oneworld member airlines and their 20 affiliates through these alliance fares, initially itineraries with Jetstar segments can only ticketed by oneworld carriers that have interline agreements with the airline - American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Japan Airlines, LAN, Qantas and Royal Jordanian. Plans are being developed to extend the arrangement to itineraries being ticketed by other oneworld member airlines.

2 Members of oneworld airline frequent flyer programmes can earn mileage rewards on eligible Qantas-coded Jetstar flights using these fares once their frequent flyer programme host airline has implemented interline links with Jetstar. Currently, this applies to American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Japan Airlines, LAN, Qantas and Royal Jordanian.
Seperately, it's also been reported that JQ pax travelling on a oneworld fare will be entitled to an increased luggage allowance, as well as complimentary meals, beverages and IFE on select services.
All opinions shared are my own, and are not necessarily those of my employer or any other organisation of which I'm affiliated to.

Jetstar is now having a fantastic offer! I just booked 2 tickets from SIN to AKL for Aug and it costs only S$600+ per return ticket including taxes, 20kg luggage allowance, meals and amenity kit!! Prices on SQ would be almost 3x more!
