I took HU in Y on PEK-KMG-PEK in 2005. Certainly back then they had a reputation for being a cheap carrier rather than anything else! IIRC, the cabin crew on one of the flights had an inflight auction for something (my Mandarin wasn't good enough to work out what it was) with all the pax shouting and bidding!

Yes, they also had an inflight auction on my flight in 2006 from Haikou to Shanghai. The auction was announced and was monitored from the C section galley by one of the flight attendants. I remembered that the dividing curtain between the C and the Y class was opened wide to allow for pax sitting in the Y section to participate in the auction. It went for at least 10 to 15 minutes or so.
