The A380 in question recently underwent its first heavy maintenance check by Lufthansa Technik in Germany, and Rolls Royce engines were overhauled at Rolls Royce facilities, Mr Joyce said.

"To suggest that Lufthansa and Rolls Royce do not have the expertise and experience to undertake the highest quality aircraft and checks is ludicrous," Mr Joyce said.

Seems to me that the poor skipper's having a hard time getting out of Singapore........
          He needs SQ

SQ and LH would also be changing engines of its 380 aircraft fleet, according to a report. [...while Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa said engine replacements were required on two planes.]

Meanwhile this report warns that Further delays may occur if the demand for spare engines exceeds worldwide spares, Epstein says. "As far as engines go, there are not a lot of Trent [900] engines around the world."

Strange, SQ pass all their A380 after checking and return them to service.

Qantas plane takeoff delayed due to technical hitch

SINGAPORE: A Qantas Boeing 747 plane bound for Frankfurt was delayed at Singapore's Changi Airport for about an hour on Monday morning.

Qantas said the delay was due to a technical problem. It did not elaborate further, except saying that the problem was not engine-related.

The plane was in transit in Singapore from Sydney.

QF5 took off for Frankfurt at about 10am.

                      - CNA/ir

Poor Qantas.. they're having a tough time these days. After making the headlines for two engine failures, even a technical delay (albeit not related to the engine) makes it to the news

                          • Qantas A380 engine not the same as that on SIA aircraft
That's a misleading headline. SQ and QF's engines are physically the same engine with no differences. It's just that the QF's engines have 2000lbs more max thrust available than SQ's engines. It's just a programming thing.

Obviously, sensational journalism won't work if the headline read:
"Qantas A380 engine is physically the same as that on SIA aircraft but the only difference is a firmware programming that allows for 2000lbf of greater thrust"

I completely understand what you mean and that's why SIA had to check all their A388's powerplants. It's because they stem from the same series--Trent 900.

It's just like when British Airways Flight 38 crash-landed short of 27L at LHR due to ice formation in the fuel lines of the Trent 895 engine. Most 777s had to be checked even though they were powered by Trents 884s or 892s, because they all stem from the Trent 800 family of engines.
