Thing is, many of their competitor airlines would be flying A380s, 77Ws, 787s and even A350s by then. Not so much a case of this or that aircraft is better, but rather more of, isn't it a bit late?

Guess they are caught in a catch 22 situation. Need planes but unfortunately 787 is still under testing.A350 in still a drawing on the paper Might as well go for a more refined product like A330. Also they have a choice to convert the option laer to A350? That assuming it fliers soon as scheduled and not delay many years more.

I doubt MH ordered A350s (yet) Also I wonder what they're going to use to replace their ageing 747s

What I meant is they have 15 firm and 10 option for the A330 order as off now, hence the 10 option at a later time can be converted to A350? Assuming evething goes fine and the A350 is off the paper and on air without any gliches then surely it makes some sense to turn the option into A350 order say down the lane in 2011.
