  • Malaysia Airlines to suspend KUL-ARN-EWR route

    Press Release 7 July 2009
Malaysia Airlines suspends services to Stockholm and New York

Subang (7 July 2009): Malaysia Airlines will suspend its thrice-weekly services from Kuala Lumpur to New York via Stockholm vice versa effective October 2009.

The last flight from Kuala Lumpur to New York will be on 30 September while the last flight departing New York will be on 1 October and Stockholm on 2 October 2009.

Malaysia Airlines Commercial Director, Dato' Rashid Khan said, "We have been serving New York since 1998 and Stockholm since 2004. We have decided to suspend the services as demand has dropped due to the global economic crisis.

"The suspension is part of our continuous review to ensure that we retain the correct balance in network and fleet utilization given supply and demand.

"We are making arrangements to notify all who are affected. Customers holding tickets issued prior to today for flights from Kuala Lumpur to New York/ Stockholm vice versa and Stockholm to New York vice versa will be eligible for a refund, without any fees. We can also make arrangements for them to fly with our partner airlines should they wish to continue with their journey."

Malaysia Airlines will continue to offer its thrice weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur to Los Angeles via Taipei. It will maintain an office in New York and continue to offer services to the Big Apple via its airline partners.

Malaysia Airlines will also maintain an office in Stockholm and customers can continue to connect to Stockholm via Amsterdam with Malaysia Airlines' code share partner, KLM.

For further information, customers can contact their travel agents. Those who purchased their tickets via Malaysia Airlines' offices, call centre and website can contact Malaysia Airlines' call centre at 1300 88 3000 (Malaysia). Customers in North America can contact the Los Angeles' office at 1 800 552 9264 while those in Sweden are to call the Stockholm office at 08-50530050

This leaves SIA as the only airline in Southeast Asia to have connections to New York. Don't tell me even SIA's New York link is on the verge of being cancelled too.

It's about time, it's been bleeding money since the start and the only reason they didn't drop it before is because politicians (those well known aviation experts) wouldn't let them as they 'must have a flight to New York'. I wonder how long before EZE is finally dropped....or has he still got his ranch there ?.

MH really need to get in an alliance, but ScaryTeam - despite being a perfect fit - don't seem to want them.

I thought they flew in EWR rather than JFK, am I wrong?

No, you're right. They do fly to Newark.

Someone previously said on SQTalk that MH seems to be really profiting from flying to Buenos Aires, because it is the only airline linking Argentina with Asia and South Africa (until recently).

MH is eyeing on SkyTeam and has already signed some agreement with them, and will probably join in 2011.

Nonsense. That flight has been bleeding money for years. They have tried to drop it at least three times but have been blocked by the usual suspect(s).

MH have signed an agreement with SkyTeam ? That will be news to them!!.

AF have been blocking MH joining for a few years now, hence MH moving towards OW. MH are also peeved that despite being the ideal fit to fill a fair sized hole in Asia for ScaryTeam, and having strong links and codeshares with KL, they have been ignored and VN have moved above them in the pecking order and will join next year.

What's wrong with AF? Why did they not want MH to join? Ya, I think the only viable option that makes sense would be OneWorld

I am quite curious about the story behind AF and MH.
