Delta Air Lines and Virgin Blue say they plan to form a joint venture that will expand both carriers' reach between the US and Australia and the South Pacific.

The airlines said in a statement on Thursday that they would seek regulatory approval to form a joint venture, but would collaborate on codesharing, frequent flyer reciprocity and in other areas in the meantime.

V Australia is a subsidiary of Virgin Blue

The hookup makes sense in that DL can feed traffic at US end and DJ at Australian end. However it is a surprise they aren't even trying to do a virgins link up.
