Tiger Airways gains access to Indonesian market

SINGAPORE: Tiger Airways has been given the green light to fly to Indonesia - first to Jakarta and then possibly other key Indonesian cities like Denpasar in Bali.

The move comes after a four-year fight by the budget carrier to gain access to the Indonesian market.

Indonesia has long resisted allowing foreign budget carriers in.

Tiger's success in breaking into the market comes after it was designated a "boutique airline" by regulatory authorities.

It will have to offer enhanced services such as free beverages on a new boutique service named "harimau", which is the Indonesian word for "tiger", on their Indonesian flights.

Currently, the only Singapore low-cost model allowed into Indonesia is Valuair, which has not been termed a budget airline there.

Tiger is finalising its flight schedules and fares.
