  • Jetstar (JQ) Facing Competition

Following the recent announcement by Tiger Airways of an expansion of their flights from ADL, which will include 6 flights per day to MEL (Tullamarine), Jetstar has finally dumped Avalon (AVV) as its Melbourne port for flights to/from ADL.

The change takes affect from 1 September with all ADL/MEL/ADL flights now operating to Tullamarine.

    As a result:

Virgin Blue (DJ) will operate up to 9 direct flights per day using 737-700/800
Jetstar (JQ) 1 direct flight per day using A320
Tiger Airways (TR) up to 6 direct flights per day using A320/319
Qantas (QF) up to 14 flights per day using 737-400/800, 767

Sorry when I started I actually thought that JQ had more ADL/MEL flights. Anyway their are rumours that Tiger is going to add more ex-ADL flights as it receives more aircraft so it will be interesting to see how JQ, DJ and QF react.

While I applaud Tiger's move, I do wonder why it chose to launch routes which are all already flown by incumbents. Opening up new markets may earn it more publicity points.
