American Airlines has had early-stage merger talks with US Airways and is in advanced talks for an alliance with Continental Airlines, sources briefed on the situation said.

Merge with US? If that's true, I'd wonder what medication had to be administered and to which executive for that to proceed.

But maybe I'm missing a clever argument for such a merger.

AA sure does love to go after airlines with crappy old planes.

The AA-CO alliance would be good, with a caveat that CO will be brought into oneworld. The competition regulators might be a tad concerned though...

But I also understand that the CO-UA merger is quite likely to occur.
