AIR France-KLM chief executive Jean-Cyril Spinetta has broken off talks to buy Alitalia after failing to reach an accord with labour unions, leaving the Italian carrier with few options for survival.
Alitalia, which has had losses of E1 million ($1.69 million) a day for more than a year, is short of cash.
Chairman Maurizio Prato had said a deal with Air France-KLM was the airline's last chance to return to financial health, and he resigned after Air France pulled out.
