The press was too quick in the 2nd incident to say low fuel.

True reason was that runway was closed and they were asked to stay aloft for another 30 or so mins while the incident on the runway was sorted out. Pilot decided there may not be enough to stay aloft for that long and decided to divert to another airport to re-fuel to be safe and return to original airport.

        Good decision IMHO

OK, so here's the full article on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Airlines_Flight_120.

The incident is terrifying, I would say. China Airlines see a patchy record of several incidents in aviation history.

According to the latest I saw on TOF, the fuel leak appears to have been caused by a bolt puncturing a fuel line or fuel-holding area in the engine. The bolt either came from or was pushed by something in the slat assembly (flaps on the front of the wing). The slat retracting after landing could have pushed a bolt through a sensitive area, springing the leak. Boeing has had previous reports of the same problem being experienced by other carriers. At this point, far too early to blame CI maintenance. Could be either a maintenance issue or a design flaw, or perhaps a combination of both.

Amen, MegatopLover. I'd prefer to wait for the official report (if i can be bothered by that stage ) before passing judgment or indulging in speculation.

ATW: Loose bolt said to have led to China Airlines 737 fire, explosion

                http://atwonline.com/news/story.html?storyID=9992

The carrier outlined details of pay packages for the 157 passengers who escaped the aircraft. Each business class passenger will receive TWD30,000 ($989.75) as a "trip payment" plus TWD20,000 for carry-on baggage and TWD30,000 for checked baggage. Each economy passenger will receive TWD25,000 plus TWD20,000 for carry-on bags and TWD20,000 for checked luggage.

CI described the compensation in a statement as "good-will payments" and noted that they are in addition to $100 and ¥25,000 ($217.90) in cash given to each passenger on the day of the incident.

                    Not anymore. No thanks.
Wonderful choice, just completed FUK/TPE/BKK return on a combo of 333 and744 of CI. On the way back after the fire (8/28) from BKK to TPE I was on one of the 744 rotating back from Europe. I sat in the very last row in economy and was beside the door where the sleeping FA was seated. I felt like reporting her to the IFSM (thankfully I was trained at a FF event in YYZ on how to evacuate an aircraft/work the doors and slides)but didn't. Taipei airport T1 is a disgrace, and the newer T2 is well along the way to joining it. It doesn't seem that maintenance is a high priority for CI or TIAA....I will never fly them again or through that airport. BTW, flew in in the 8/18 to Taipei during the typhoon....that was quite the landing........
