  • Review of Qantas FF Silver welcome pack

I was excited to receive my Qantas Frequent Flyer (QFF) Silver pack this week, and thought it would be a novelty for SQTalkers : here's what it contains :

Welcome letter states that I will be a QFF Silver member from June 07 to Dec 08 (19 months : very generous !), with extra 10kg baggage allowance and 25% bonus miles.
Attached is an invitation card for a one-time visit to a Qantas Club lounge, valid till Dec 07 (another perk SQ Silver level doesn't have. I read the T & A carefully, and it doesn't say its not transferable (anyone can clarify about this ?) , so I may give it to someone who is flying QF later this year.

On the left is the membership card, and on the right are two luggage tags with rubber ties. The luggage tags are quite well designed with slide out portion for writing name/address. I will attach these to some of my luggage just for fun.

Folder with brochures : (L to R) QF merchandise (rather overpriced I think) , membership benefits, Qantas club benefits and fees (A$600 for one year ! Seems expensive considering you just have to reach Gold level to access the clubs ?)

Verdict : quite an enjoyable pack to look through, and features that are better than SQ KF Silver level : generous 19 month membership, lounge invite card (small token but much appreciated), slightly better designed luggage tags. . There is a chance to get LIFETIME Silver and Gold status too (gasp !)

Disadvantages of QF FF : no SIN-based support phone number to call; poor earn/burn rates (I was told) with no 15% internet redemption discount, poorer internet website (IMHO).

    Comments, anyone ?

Belated congrats on the PS status!

The mileage bonus only works on QF, AA and BA - not on any oneworld carrier.

I think QFF has pretty good 'home' benefits and a rather reasonable prerequisite for status. You could easily get PLT with a well-planned oneworld RTW in D or A. You also need 4 QF flights a year - which you've already done.

So if you actually do fly QF a lot it's worth aiming for Platinum/ow emerald status (WP ) - besides the general oneworld benefits, you get a 100% bonus on QF/AA/BA, entry to BA Arrivals Lounge on long haul QF/BA flights to LHR, guaranteed seating in Y, more baggage allowance, F priority tags...etc You're also at the top of the QF list of upgrades using points (QFF doesn't confirm upgrades at time of request - you go on a waitlist and the upgrades clear based on demand), apart from Chairman's Lounge which is the invitational tier - apart from extremely busy routes like LAX-SYD or JFK-SYD midweek it's rare that your upgrade requests will fail to clear.

They are pretty stingy with redemptions unless you're redeeming in Y. But when you redeem in Y - think about the extremely high fuel surcharges QF will hit you with - about $600 for MEL-LHR return, excluding APD. So not really worth it in Y. J and F awards however - are ridiculously expensive.

QFF is not completely without its advantages, just that it's hard to justify using the scheme if you only fly QF occasionally and have no use for things like guaranteed Y seating.

Depends on what you're looking for really and what works for you. I personally went for AAdvantage because I'm concerned about affordable F and J awards, and I don't really need more than the oneworld sapphire or emerald benefits.

JMO - take with a pinch of salt, preferably with grounded pepper as well.

Won't get the requisite 4 BA flights cause some people chickened out on the stillborn ARN trip

Ok, it's yours, since you asked for it first !

            (That means you're sure it's transferable ?)

When do you need it and how can I pass it to you, SQFG ?

edit: KeithMel's confirmed that they are transferable

                  Very naughty indeed, those Londoners........

To be honest, it was not quite worth it to go spend the additional money for BA Silver - did the sums and it wasn't worthwhile.

Oh, forgot to congratulate you too uprightman!

Thank you ! I am quite happy with my QF experiences so far.

SQFG : I will pass the lounge pass to you 17 July, then. Please remind me ?

KeithMEL : I've done my research on BAEC and CX MPC/Asiamiles, and so far BAEC is out of the question - they don't even wanna sign up anyone from Asia. As for CX, I've heard mixed reviews of their service (jjpb3 says their Economy product is clearly inferior to SQ) and I just don't have any inclination to join them at the moment.

BAEC will sign you up in Asia - but will enrol you also in Asia Miles. Your tierpoints will go to BAEC, but your Miles to AsiaMiles. That's how it happened to me- after i bought a BAEC joining eligible fare.

If you're a QC member already you will not get baggage tags with the Silver pack. Only Gold and above.

Congratulations on reaching QFF Silver. For me, I will sign up for BAEC rather than QFF. Well, both are quite good, and the one-time lounge offer is good, something that SQ doesn't have.
