TIGER Airways has shunned Sydney Airport in its initial expansion and handed back slots it had been allocated for the northern winter season.

Tiger Australia corporate affairs head Matthew Hobbs confirmed that Tiger had returned slots at Sydney for the end of October to March.

TIGER Airways has added Canberra, Hobart and Newcastle to its routes as it prepares to start domestic services next month.

But the airline may snub Sydney as a destination, with Tiger chief executive Tony Davis admitting the harbour city may not fit the airline's low-cost model. While he stopped short of saying that Sydney would be left off the list of routes, he conceded that Newcastle — Tiger's first destination in NSW — was a better fit for the airline.

not surprised, Kingsford Smith is ATROSCIUS as far as congestion goes, I've always wanted to visit Canberra, maybe fly there and drive onto Sydney

Despite the congestion, SYD airport is a very convenient airport in terms of distance to the CBD. I have long suspected that Tiger would not go into SYD in the near future. Their strategies in Asia has seen them trying to stay away from the mainstream routes. That said, given the right pricing, I don't mind flying with Tiger for short domestic routes like CBR or OOL, but definitely not PER tho.

By the way, this week Tiger has sale going on, everyday pretty much different offers. Yesterday, they have 9.95 fare to OOL, CBR, HBA, etc. Today the prices gone up to 39.95.

Great to hear that Tiger has decided to start flights to/from ADL. This is how the Adelaide Advertiser reported the announcement.

LOW-FARE airline Tiger Airways will begin flying the Adelaide-Melbourne route on January 10 with a one-way fare of $9.95.

About 8500 of the promotional fares are available but are expected to be snapped up quickly, as they have been when Tiger has announced other routes in Australia from its Melbourne Tullamarine base.
Its website www.tigerairways.com also lists one-way fares in either direction on the Adelaide-Melbourne route at $19.95, $49.95 and $59.95, all including taxes and fees.

Tiger will fly twice a day each way on the Adelaide-Melbourne route and tickets can be booked to continue the trip from Melbourne to its other destinations, such as Tasmania, Queensland, Canberra and Newcastle.

Tiger has promised to better the competitors' fares "consistently."

Flights at this stage are scheduled to operate:

                ADL/MEL

                0750/0935
                2015/2200

                MEL/ADL

                0630/0720
                1855/1945

According to the press article Tiger is yet to decide whether it will operate from the new ADL Airport Terminal (T1) or from the old domestic terminal.

                  Oh oh...

                  http://www.smh.com.au/news/business/...766870007.html

THE travel plans of thousands of Tiger Airways customers are in limbo after the budget carrier's hopes of gaining regulatory approval hit a snag.

Yesterday, the airline was forced to postpone a "proving" flight - the final test required before beginning commercial services next Friday.

                    http://www.theage.com.au/news/news/t...753255547.html

Australia's newest airline, budget carrier Tiger Airways, created national aviation history this morning when its first commercial flight took off from Melbourne Airport bound for the Gold Coast.

One hundred and sixty nine passengers boarded the 7am flight, which took off half an hour after its scheduled departure time.

War of words between QF and TT

                      Well it didn't take long.............

A STOUSH has developed between Australia's main airline Qantas and its newest rival Tiger Airways over services to Alice Springs.

Even as it celebrated its first Australian domestic flights today, low-cost airline Tiger Airways was complaining that Qantas was preventing it from starting flights to the desert centre.

The budget airline said Qantas would not provide it any ground-handling services at Alice Springs Airport at any price, despite Tiger offering to rearrange its flight schedule.
Seems like QF doesn't want to play in the same sand-pit. The full article is attached.

No surprise here. Qantas is not known to welcome fair playing field.

                          Interesting development:

                          http://www.travelweekly.com.au/articles/2A/0C05752A.asp

Tiger Airways plans to ask the Australian government for international air access for its Australian-based aircraft, chief executive Tony Davis has said.

And the irony now is that QF is going to terminate its Melbourne-Alice Springs service?

QF is exiting Melbourne-Ayers' Rock, not Alice Springs.
