  • FT Article - A New Era of 'Ultra-long-haul' Aviation

Useful article in this weekend's Financial Times on ultra long haul.

The article talks about EK's new Dubai to Panama City service starting next February, a 17 hr 35 minute, 8587 mile sector.

QF is reported to be considering PER-LHR usin the 789 (Can this aircraft do that?).

SQ is mentioned in the context of restarting ULH from SIN to North America using A359ULR aircraft.

How we've progressed in 16 years

    A345 (2002)
    - MTOW: 372 tonne
    - Fuel capacity: 214,810L

    A359ULR (2018)
    - MTOW: 280 tonne
    - Fuel capacity: 165,000L

Reduction of 92MT of weight and almost 50,000L of fuel

But.....we can no longer fly at MACH 2....

So long as oil stays where it is, ULR has a market. The real limit might well be human endurance for people in the back: 17, 18 hours or so in a 10-abreast 777 or a 9-abreast 787? Ouch!

Looking at the payload/range charts of the 789... it's doable. It's not easy - you'd be close to the limits of the plane, and I suspect the cargo load would be non-existent. But it's doable.

That's why there should only by PYs on these ULRs. 2-4-2 would be great.
