  • BA 777 fire and evacuation in Las Vegas airport

    All evacuated safely.

    A reporter happened to be onboard...

    Youtube video from another aircraft nearby.

    And the ATC audio...(Worth a listen. Very calm, professional pilots and ATC. For those not into this sort of thing "Speedbird" is the BA callsign).

    My takeaways from all this: Watch the safety video when you board. Know where your nearest exit is. Keep your shoes on until at least after take-off. And don't take your hand luggage with you down the slide!

    Thanks, yflyer, for compiling this. It's interesting how these people trained to listen so fast, for instance the part where the TC summarised the weather.

    Yes, good advice on being aware of the exits and having your shoes on.

      It is quite calm as you would hope and expect, but the controller seems to initially miss the pilot calling 'Speedbird 2276 Stopping' at around 55 seconds. The important thing is everyone made it off safely. An engine fire on take off could have ended so differently....

      Not a fan of BA as a rule, but I can't deny they have the coolest callsign in the industry.

            Some other nice ones...

            SA = Springbok
            VX = Redwood
            Rolls-Royce = Merlin

            And one more from an airline no longer with us...

            PA = Clipper.

              Agreed. I think nowadays there has been so many distractions for passengers not looking at the safety video, such as Smart Phones (in flight mode, but you can still play offline games), newspapers and books.

              I have noticed quite a number of airlines are trying to gain back passenger's attention by introducing a more interesting way. The notable ones we see is Virgin America and Air New Zealand. Perhaps other airlines, such as SQ, can also attempt to update their safety videos in this way so passengers will get to remember the safety instructions and follow them if something wrong happened to their plane?

              Finally, I am thankful that this plane is not on airbourne, or else we will see a disaster going on.

                Not bad, but Speedbird is the clear winner for me.

                What that Rolls Royce one, when did they start an airline ?

                  Doesn't have to be for an airline - Rolls Royce as an engine company owns (or used to, anyway) aircraft for use as engine testbeds. As far as I can tell the last one was a 742 used for the Trent 1000 development.

                    The captain of this flight has become a bit of a mini celebrity in the UK. He has people buying him pints when he goes out and is turning down TV interviews.

                    It turns out he was BA's 15th most experienced pilot having been there 42 years. That's the sort of person you want in charge when a GE90 throws a wobbler .

                      Do you Reckon the aircraft is a write off? The damage looks extensive!

                        Everything I've seen says it's a write-off. It's too old for any major fixes (first flight was January 1999); even if repairs were possible the costs wouldn't be worth it.

                          That would mean BA would account for 33% of the 777 hull losses. A tie with MH.

                            That said, everyone on the BA planes got off their aircraft safely, either with or without their hand luggage...
