Essentially it'd be a SYD-SCL service operated by B744 aircraft. This of course means that commencement of such a service will be contingent on the A380 being delivered in time as I don't think QF has any new 744 orders and their current ones are tied up in existing long hauls to JNB, HKG, Europe and the US.
The news.com.au article erred a bit - this isn't the first time QF is flying to South America as they did fly to EZE some years ago.
oneworld award options to SCL is like finding a needle in a haystack at the best of times. The anticipated service is in addition to LA's SYD-AKL-SCL service - meaning (marginally?
) more oneworld award options to South America for those downunder.
