  • Qatar A350 First Commercial Flight -- Surprisingly Low Key

Surprisingly low-key inaugural for the first A350 flight, QR67 from Doha to Frankfurt, today. Arrived in Frankfurt a few hours ago, at 12.28pm local time.

3-3-3 in Y. Me thinks it would feel pretty cramped.

Not anything close to how a 787 would feel with 3-3-3 or 777 would feel with 3-4-3. The A350 is quite a bit wider than the 787.

From what I have read, the A350 cabin is wider than the 787, but slightly narrower than the 777, so probably a more comfortable 3-3-3 than the 787 but not as spacious as a 3-3-3 777. But of course I would not want to pass judgement until I actually fly in an A350 in Y...

After a very uncomfortable experience in a middle seat on an Emirates 777 configured 3-4-3 Y, I have been avoiding this config, even preferring an extended layover in Dubai to catch an A380 in Y instead.

I also have no desire to experience the 787 in 3-3-3 Y config...I would rather fly older planes like 777's in 3-3-3 or A330's in 2-4-2, even if they have no IFE.

AAB has publicly stated the 3rd airframe will be put to service on DOH-SIN. This means QR will become the first scheduled operator of the type at Changi from later this year.

Check out this clip by Richard Quest of CNN. Definitely a low-key affair, AAB wasn't even dressed up. But it was not without the inaugural geeks, some proudly sporting attire from another First to Fly

“We chose Frankfurt because sometimes I like to show off my product to airlines that object our entering into their markets,” said Akbar Al Baker, Chief Executive of Qatar.

Nice video clip...thanks for sharing the link, Jumbojet Lover!

The J cabin looks comfortable. Hard to tell how roomy the Y cabin is compared to current widebodies, but it does look less claustrophobic than a 10 abreast 777 or 9 abreast 787...

The A350 was designed to fit 18in seats in a 9-abreast configuration. That's why Airbus markets it as Xtra Wide Body.

As long-haul flights become more frequent and cover greater distances, the A330 family and the A350 XWB offer an 18-inch standard seat in economy to ensure the comfort of passengers travelling in all classes of service, while the A380 jetliner is designed for a standard 18.5-inch seat in economy class.
