    • Hong Kong Express to transform into LCC

Hong Kong is set to receive its first LCC since Oasis Hong Kong ceased operations in Apr-2008, in a new test for Cathay Pacific and its sister carrier, Dragonair. Hong Kong Airlines president Yang Jianhong stated Hong Kong Express Airways will be transformed into an (unnamed) LCC in Jul-2012 or Aug-2012, operating under its new low-cost model to cities in mainland China, South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia. It will use the traffic rights of Hong Kong Express to Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Osaka and Taipei, according to reports in the South China Morning Post.

        • Beijing looms as competitive focal point for Scoot and Jetstar

Jetstar this week commenced flights between Singapore and Beijing on a timetable that was, uncannily or not, subsequently replicated by incumbent carrier Singapore Airlines to create its fourth daily service on the route. SIA's new service, due to commence 16-Dec-2011, arrives in Beijing at 1am and departs at 2am. But is that really a timetable appealing to SIA's premium traffic? Or has SIA started the route so it can be quickly handed over to its new low-cost subsidiary, Scoot, once it commences operations?

              • Asian airline margins being squeezed but are faring better than in other regions

Airline margins have been “squeezed” in 2011, due to sharply higher fuel prices, according to the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), although the association noted that the region’s airlines are faring better than airlines in other regions as they continue to benefit from relatively strong economic growth in developing economies across the region.

                      • Qantas and Jetstar change 787 strategy to support Asian growth

The continuous high-growth in Asia as well as opportunities to achieve better unit costs are the drivers behind a broad change of strategy for how the Qantas Group will deploy the B787-8 and B787-9 across its Qantas and Jetstar brands. Rather than have B787-9s replace Jetstar’s B787-8s, which would have been sent to Qantas for domestic use, Jetstar will keep the B787-8 and operate it alongside the B787-9. Qantas will further reap the B787’s efficiency by deploying the aircraft almost entirely on international routes, leaving domestic routes to A330s and B737s.
