  • TR focusing on ICN-ORD

    Recently flew the following flights:

    12/3 ORD-PVG UA F
    12/7 PVG-SIN SQ F
    12/11 SIN-CGK LH Y
    12/14 CGK-SIN LH Y
    12/16 SIN-DPS JQ Y
    12/18 DPS-SIN JQ Y
    12/20 SIN-PVG SQ F
    12/21 PVG-ICN-ORD OZ F

I am focusing on my ICN-ORD as reported in TOF. The rest of the flights were fine and all on time except for.......UA ORD-PVG, delayed 3 hours because they loaded the wrong cargo and had to taxi back, unload, reload and then the paperwork delay.

SQ F both ways were standard fare, 3/18 PVG-SIN and 4/12 SIN-PVG. Both were dinner flights and I noticed caviar was gone from menu. Service was typical SQ, so no need to mention so much.

LH Y was really not a big issue for me, pretty much empty flights both ways. JQ was a good experience, full flights both ways, and did not experience any service since I did not buy any drinks.

Here is what I had written over at the other forum. Sorry for no pictures since I do not have a flicker or shutterfly album.

PVG-ICN was supposed to be a 747 but was downgraded to a 777 so I was put in C. Agent was very apologetic and blocked the seat next to me. For this short 2 hour flight, I didn't care that much but was impressed by the service and food served on this short flight. C was about 70% full.

Had a long layover in ICN (3.5 hours) and stayed mostly in the F lounge surfing the web and chatting. Was able to make international calls for free, ask for the phone from the F lounge agent. Food was alright, 3 hot items and Haagen Daz ice-cream. Had JW Blue and Remy XO available. Showers was fine but lacked any kleenex, that was surprising. Went to the gate about 40 mins prior to departure and there was a line of people already waiting to board in the F/C/Star Gold line. Someone came up to check passports and BP while a gate agent followed. Saw my BP and told me I could go up to the front of the line. Declined as I did not want any attention.

Boarded the aircraft (HL7775) and it was a very nice cabin, with nice colors (personal opinion). I was to be the only one in F today, with another seat taken by a reserve pilot. Given Bvlgari amenity kit and PJs. Terribly disappointed in the headsets and ending up using my Shure SE530s. You need a converter to use the Shures which I had at that time.

Stewardess came over to personally introduce herself to me and was served nuts and a drink prior to departure. Seat was great and I felt it was better than UA's old F. For some reason, the seat in the 777 (well, my seat) was flat, contrary to what some posters have mentioned. Could have more storage around me but I noticed the space beside the seat had what looked like a storage bin but it was screwed in.

After takeoff, curtains were closed and stewardess came over to confirm my meal choice of the Chinese menu (Thanks Peter11!) Asked for a Hennessey XO and water to accompany my meal. Meal items are as follows:

Deep Fried Prawn with sweet and sour sauce

Cold cuts of Abalone with spicy mustard sauce

    Shark's Fin Soup

Deep fried prawn with black bean sauce

Stir Fried beef and pine mushroom

    Served with rice.

Dessert was ice-cream with international cheese selection and fruits. Skipped everything for dessert except for fruits. Not overly full but did not want to eat more.

Told the stewardess to wake up me 4 hours prior to landing so that I can beat jetlag. About to fall asleep when I noticed one stewardess was going to put a blanket over me. I declined and promptly fell asleep for about 5 hours. It was a good sleep and I woke up refreshed.

Had dimsum for the snack and it was very good if you did not want to eat heavy stuff. Lavatory was cleaned every time after I used it. Is there only 1 lav in F? That seemed to be the impression I got.

Had the Korean meal prior to arrival, and did not finish everything. It was a huge meal for a pre-arrival meal, and much much better than UA F's arrival meal (Turkey sandwich or fruit plate for ORD-PVG in F)

Was given the wine decanter as a gift prior to landing. Immigration lines were long in ORD and waited about 35 mins, but noticed the bags came out only after 15 mins (very impressive for ORD) I could see it because the carousel was right in front of the immigration line. My bag was tagged "First" but noticed some other bags tagged as "Special" Anyone know what that meant?

Overall, I would fly OZ again. Perhaps more importantly what impressed me was the service level in C instead of F. F you already expected, but the short flight in C from PVG-ICN left a bigger impression on me.
