  • A B744 F Experience Onboard SQ 25 from JFK to FRA

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we are not parking at our gate this evening. It is raining outside and it is very wet. So, please be careful when you step off the plane. This is part of a cost saving measures at Delta and Northwest. We do not have a lot of money because we just came out of bankruptcy, you know", so said the senior flight attendant on the PA system.

That's how my trip started at JFK.

Everyone on the plane laughed at the announcement. I found it very funny as well. Most flight attendants in the US have a good sense of humor and this one is no exception. The flight was NW 2127 from MSP. It was a NW flight on an ex-NW A319 plane but in DL color. The weather was indeed quite wet that evening.

We were then shuttled to a bus gate at Terminal 4 when I spotted SQ B744 that would be my ride home for the next 19 hours or so parking on a tarmac.

The bus ride was uneventful but when we arrived at the gate, we were not allowed to get off the bus because our DL/NW gate agent was not there to greet us on our gate - there was 1 other gate right next to ours which was staffed with DL/NW agent but no that's not our gate so we couldn't go through there. This was just plain stupid and I could hear everyone bitching as we all had to remain inside the bus until the gate agent arrived. It took around 15 minutes before we were allowed to get off the bus and by that time I was really looking forward to my F experience with our beloved SQ.

The good thing was that all DL/NW flights operate out of the B concourse of Terminal 4 which is also the International terminal for JFK. So, the transfer to the A concourse for my SQ flight was a breeze.

Upon arriving at SQ F check-in counter on the upper level, I was greeted by a Thai agent wearing TG ground staff uniform. From the name tag she was wearing that night, she is also a Thai. I found it rather strange that SQ was not using its own staff but rather the staff of its alliance partner for the F class check-in. I remembered vaguely that the last time I had flown this same route in F, I had actually been served by an SQ agent. The 2 C class check-in counters, however, were handled by agents wearing SQ colored tie.

The check-in process went smoothly. I wasn't given an invitation to the Virgin Clubhouse but instead 2 words "Virgin Lounge" was written on my BP. She then asked me if I knew the lounge and offered to took me there. I thanked her and told her not to worry as I knew where the lounge was exactly.

Here is a view of the lounge as I was walking along the back side of the check-in counters..

and as I crossed the walkway towards the lounge...

I also noticed that the LX / *A lounge next to the Clubhouse (which I guessed I had an access to as well as a *Gold member).

    The Virgin Clubhouse

I noticed the lounge was quite empty that evening. As soon as I entered, one of the waiters came to me with a menu. I asked if he had a Diet Dr. Pepper and he said yes and quickly went to get one for me along with a glass full of ice cubes. I then asked what the soup of the day was and was told it was a roast turkey with tomato clear soup which I ordered. I also ordered the Tuna from the main course.

Here is the menu from the lounge...

my roast turkey soup which I wouldn't categorized as "clear" soup ...

and my seared tuna pasta which I only ate the tuna.

I then decided to snap some pictures of the lounge which started from the view of the tower at JFK from where I seated..

    and the lounge itself...

    with the bar...

before I headed to the shower room for my pre-take off shower. Here is a shot of the shower facility at the Clubhouse:

Onboard SQ 25 - I Love the Nose of B744

Boarding announcement was made when I was in the shower. The security line for the F and C pax going to the A concourse was light. As soon as I got into my queue, one of the security staff actually asked everyone on the normal line to join our line. Although this didn't impact me, I would imagine the next F or C pax after me would be very pissed if they knew about this spontaneous arrangement.

As I boarded this SQ's B744, I was quickly escorted to my seat on 4A. The flight that evening was on 9V-SPQ. My leather jacket was taken away and one the flight attendant came and addresses me by name as well as offered me something to drink.

Yes, I did go for water and only water for the entire flight + orange juice just prior to the arrival into FRA.

This is my seat - the legendary and very comfortable Skysuite (I wish Diamond Plus can be this comfortable for sitting as well)...

and the view from my seat to the nose...

      across to 4D, 4F, and 4K.

Pajamas and amenities kit were then distributed...

along with the usual sandals, socks, and eyeshades.

The load this evening for F was 8/10 with C and Y at high 90%. As we left our gate at around 5 minutes passed the scheduled departure time of 21:00, I noticed that A6 is the A380 gate at JFK with 3 jetways...

as I was trying to read some news from back home on ST.

Safety video was then shown and I finally managed to get this shot which I had always wanted to because I always think this guy on the video looks way too serious...

Our flight was then lining up at the end of the runway at around 21:25 for departure to FRA. The flight to FRA that evening only took 6 hours and 45 minutes. As it was too short to get any good amount of sleep, I decided to just enjoy the food, the movie, and the cabin service of the renown SQ girls and boys on this soon to be decommissioned B744 fleet type by SQ.

        The Menu and The Food

After airborne, the after take-off drink was served along with warm (yes, warm as it has always been in F - I wish SQ would be more consistent with warming the nuts in C) honey coated walnuts and cashew.

Warm hot towel was soon offered as dinner service started. The Oct - Nov, 2009 menu for that night was:

The Bed and The Arrival into FRA

As I had watched most of the movies on the new release selections, G.I. Joe seemed to be the best choice for that night to accompany my dinner at 30,000 feet cruise level.

After the movie, I was offered a turn down service which I gladly accepted. Here was the bed for the next 3 hours.

I woke up about 1 and a 1/2 hours from our destination in FRA. Apparently, the crew had put a blanket over me while I was sleeping. Kudos to the crew for this great service. A quick look at the flight path on my monitor, it was clear that we were now flying over Ireland.

          Approaching FRA over Deutchland

Soon after, our flight landed at 10:10 am local time in FRA. As we landed on runway 07R/25L (which is the outer runway of the 2 parallel runways at FRA), we then had to wait at the taxiway for about a good 10 minutes to cross 07L/25R.

We then continued to taxi to our gate at B46. Because we landed about 50 minutes earlier, our gate was still occupied by Air India B777 and we had to wait. It was noticeable from all the cranes that FRA was upgrading the facility in full force.

Air India finally left the gate and we were allowed to taxi in ....

to gate B46 which is also a A380 gate at FRA.

This concludes my trip report from JFK - FRA. I originally planned to continue my trip report for the FRA - SIN segment but I had to shelve it because my camera was out of battery power and I had checked through the charger to SIN from MSP the night before.

Anyway, I do hope all of you have enjoyed reading this report and thank you so much for your attention.

            Thanks for sharing UMD.

I have made one "Farewell Flight on 744".

Two more planned.. next week and June.

Now SQ announces that the 744 will continue till 2011.

Also SFO might see 744 again.

I'm beginning to think it is a great marketing ploy by SQ to fill their 744 with nostalgic travelers!

Like those shops you see with "FINAL CLOSING DOWN SALE" in the front! For years and years

Any chance you'll reactivate your Photobucket account? Was trying to read your SFO-ICN-SIN TR?

My photobucket account is active. I myself wonder where those SIN-ICN-SFO pictures were. I couldn't find them there either. Let me go through my hard disk and if I can find them, I will upload again.

By the way, I think you were referring to SFO instead of LAX. LAX has always had B744 via NRT.

How was your chicken, UMD? Gotham is one of my fave restaurants in NYC.

The passion fruit desserts on SQ are also the most consistently good IME.

Hope the flight home was good.

Unfortunately, the chicken was dry and the vegetables were overcooked but the mushroom ballotine was good. In terms of flavor, this dish is actually quite poor in my opinion. But then again, I am no expert in gastronomy.

The passionfruit cake however was very good with the right balance of sweet and sour elements. I think the vanilla sauce did a very good job as well .

                      My bad. Amended.

I never have the Western style chicken. I'm not a breast man. Prefer leg.
Could it be the New York caterers? Not impressed with EWR either.

You could have fooled me! I have never heard anyone review tea like you!

If memory serves, SQ uses Flying Food Group at EWR/JFK and they are IMHO not the best in-flight catering company.

He is worried about the fake business meeting he is going to take the next fake business day at the fake destination city.

Excellent TR, UMD! Thanks for sharing.

I'm going to miss the SQ 744s, especially SkySuites when they are gone.

Happened to me. I was pretty p*ssed. Was it an AI flight departing the same time?

That's why it's my least favorite timing of SQ's 4 New York flights.
