  • SZB-SIN on Firefly

Hi Everyone, this is my 1st trip report here at SQTalk. Enjoy and do share your comments/questions. This is SZB-SIN on Firefly Airlines 3rd day of operations to Singapore.

    ***

I am very grateful to receive the invitation as a media to cover the event on my blog, thanks to many feedbacks that I’ve provided openly and privately to the airline based on numerous flights that I clocked in with Firefly since its Fokker-50 days up till now.

My Media pass… probably the best thing that has happened since I started blogging! Being recognized as a media!

Being excited, I arrived at Subang SkyPark very early. Check-in was smooth and ground staffs were kind enough to create conversation even though my mind was all over the place feeling a bit nervous being on my first blogging ‘assignment’.

Received my boarding pass along with these documents to be filled. The normal entry form and a Health Declaration Card, a procedure introduced in the height of H1N1 cases in Singapore and Worldwide.

I then met up with Firefly personnel along with the other media representatives. We had RTM, NTV7, TV3, NST Business Times, Malaysian Reserve, Sinar Harian, travel magazines and Azuan the unknown blogger! Hehe

Known or unknown, each of us had to have our face painted with Firefly logo. At that point i know that this trip would be a fun and crazy trip!

Boarding started on-time with passengers traveling with kids getting to board first free-of-charge. I purposely went in a bit late for me to have the space to take photos of the plane. Not everyday I have a Media pass that allow me to snap photos of the aircraft up-close and personal.

9M-FYA, the eldest brother of Firefly’s ATR series. Being prepared for flight.

The flight load was quite good with at least 70% of seats being occupied. A good sign for the airline indeed.

We took-off from Runway 15 about 10-minutes late due to delay in departing from the gate but other than that the flight was smooth with good cruising weather at 17,000 feet.

Great hospitality by Flight Stewardess Seha and Flight Stewardess Adlina. I have flown with them separately on my prior flights with Firefly and I am always impressed with their friendliness and professionalism. Refreshments were served F.O.C, A muffin and Root Beer!

Views as we approached Singapore airspace.

Landed safely at Changi slightly behind schedule and after a short taxi, we were at Budget Terminal greeted by our host from Singapore

Not everyday you have Aladdin greeting you.

The simple ceremony started off with speeches from Mr Lee Seow Hiang, CEO of Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Dato’ Amirrudin, Acting Director General of Tourism Malaysia and Mr. Eddy Leong, Managing Director of Firefly.

    Welcome Firefly Airline to Singapore!

Souvenirs given away to passengers and media. Brochures, a cool Charles and Keith bag, a USB thumbdrive, a Firefly-Changi umbrella and many more.

Hope you guys enjoyed the photos and do give Firefly a try next time you're hopping to and from Malaysia. More updates will be posted later or can be seen my blog here.

    Very nice!

They're a little expensive at RM88 (never thought I'd ever say that for KUL-SIN from the days of the MH SQ duopoly) but Subang Airport cannot be beat for location - will give them a try soon.

I completely agree with you, they are more expensive than AK, TR and Jetstar generally speaking.

But it makes sense for me to fly FY as Subang Airport is just 10 minutes drive from my house.

Can you ask your contacts at FY if they can get an evening take-off from Singapore slot between 7-9pm?

If yes, they'd get alot more people flying...

And thanks for the TR, it was fun to read.

flew back from KUL to SIN on AK at 12.45pm yesterday (15 Jul 09) and weather wasnt co-operating as have a thunderstorm in the early morning n light rain till late morning - and on take-off climb to cruise level was moderately turbulent n cloud cover was all the way up to at least 22,000 feet as the pilot inflight announcement said that they have changed to a higher cruising attitude of 25,000feet instead of 21,000 feet to be above the clouds/weather. And I wonder how turbulent it would to be on a light ATR 72 turboprop plane on climb-out and to having to cruise through the clouds as it does not fly as high as any jet aircraft. The only time I flew in a turboprop plane was many years back in East Malaysia onboard MH F50 but then it was clear weather and flight was ok.

Never really had problems with turboprops before travelling in all kinds of weathers - they do get bumpy, but not uncomfortable. ATR72s are pretty large planes - I remember an interesting landing in BOS in the middle of a windy wintry night years ago on a much smaller turboprop. Bumpy yes, but not screamworthy.

There was once that I had to make an unscheduled stop in Samarinda, on the way from Tanjung Bara to Balikpapan, due to a heavy thunderstorm. But that was on a helicopter.

Turboprop including ATR-72 can get a bit bumpy on very windy and heavy rain dark clouds days. But from my experience (about 100 flights with FY), it never get to the extend of wild roller coaster ride. Somehow there's always room in between the clouds to navigate around bumpy clouds.

Skipping my "jalan-jalan" photos in Singapore, here are some photos of my journey back to Subang.. it was a night flight and i was tired so the photos inflight were mostly blurry.

Changi Budget Terminal.. not many flights that night

Home of the Tigers... dominated most of the check in counters

Firefly has the 2 last rows

Check-in was fast and simple. Too bad FY does not have (yes) on-line check-in facility. Something in the future perhaps.

After immigration and common security check (fast!), the common departure hall

Some outlets. I wonder if its 24-hours?

                  ATR was there on time~!

                  Ready to go..

I'll post some more random photos later to complete the Trip Report Cheers...

How far is SZB by cab/car from KL Sentral and Jalan Bukit Bintang (e.g. Westin) and Jalan Sultan Ismail (e.g. Sheraton Imperial)? 30mins about right?

Is there some sort of bus service between SZB and KL Sentral like with KLIA LCCT?

30 mins sounds about right, can be slightly more depending on time of day and traffic jams... then, God only knows...

No idea about the bus service, doubt there's a proper express one, just a local service probably

One of the biggest drawback of Subang Airport is not having LRT or dedicated bus services connecting to KL Sentral.

There is a normal Rapid KL local service. U81 : Pasar Seni LRT - Subang Airport - Subang Perdana - Mah Sing Industrial Park that passes through KL Sentral and some other LRT stations.

But i stongly suggest you take a taxi straight to your destination or take a taxi to LRT Kelana Jaya and get a train from there. Taxi fares to KL should not be more expensive than fares from KLIA to City
