    Dear all,

Just want to do a short trip report on my recent flights “Down Under”! For years, I have really wanted to try the Brisbane flights, especially the new daytime flight, as well as the Brisbane-Cairns-Hong Kong-Cairns-Brisbane flights. So I finally found a really nice business class fare and have also fulfilled my wish to fly Virgin Blue. For the Cathay Pacific segments, I don’t want to say much, but the Virgin Blue flights will be a bit more detailed.

    CX 157 HKG-BNE Lv1250 Arr2320 Airbus A340-300 B-HXG “Oneworld”

The purser of CX 157, Billy, asked me an interesting question mid-flight. “Mr. Leung, why did you pick this flight? The timing is not that great!” I said, “I hate redeye flights and the timing is not bad. I had two nice meals on the plane, watch some movies and television programs, and arrived right on time for bed. No need to deal with jet lag!” He just smiled, “Well, at least, this daytime flight was always quiet and lightly loaded!”

Weeks ago after I booked my flight, I noticed that the Airbus A340 had the new 1-1-1 seating configuration, which possibly meant that the new “oneworld” livered flight will be used. Thanks to no aircraft substitution, B-HXG indeed was sitting there at gate four! Unfortunately, gate 4 does not permit a good close-up picture.

I think enough was said about the new herringbone business class, and as I overhead some conversation on board, “Do you hate it or love it?” Most people notice that increased privacy but the narrowness of the seats is just obvious. I have no issue with the herringbone arrangement, but CX crams at least two to three extra rows of seats, and that is unacceptable. I continue to fail the seat, which reflects on the survey I filled out. I honestly can’t see how CX fixes it without removing a few rows that should not be there in the beginning. But the Airbus 1-1-1 seating makes the cabin look less crowded and the window “K” seats are preferred because you face a wall instead of rows of feet. I don’t notice any additional traffic on the “K” side.

Boarding began on time at 12:18pm, and door was closed at 12:40pm, due to the light load. Since we are using R/W25L for takeoff, taxing time was minimal. After a Hong Kong Express’ Boeing 737-800 Winglet B-KBR took off, we took our turn and lifted off at 12:55pm. One of the disadvantage of flying this brand new reconfigured Airbus A340 is that the Sky Map is disabled and I can’t trace the routing, which I actually am curious. Flying time was eight hours and twelve minutes.

Meal service was a full lunch after takeoff, and a two-course refreshment prior to landing, with some light snacks, such as Apple chips, almonds, and peanuts available mid-flight. The service was attentive due to the light load. Weather at Brisbane was awful – heavy rains for our arrival. Descent began at 10:34pm local time, and we landed on R/W1 at 11:07pm. Since we had to taxi all the way back to the international terminal, we did not park at gate 80 till 11:17pm. We parked between a Thai Airways’ Boeing 777-300ER HS-TKA and a Singapore Airlines’ Airbus A330-300 9V-STF both preparing for their late night flights to Bangkok and Singapore. Immigration was relatively quiet, as the TG flight had arrived earlier in the evening. There are a few large Indian families being process, but no major wait. I heard about horror stories with the Australian immigration, but was glad to report that the staffs were friendly and polite, and I did not get grilled or questioned. The agent even told me how to use the express card, and the custom officers were respectful and my bags were x-rayed and there was no issue. But the taxi ride to Hilton Brisbane was another story.

After a short rest here at Hilton Brisbane, I listened to some well-given advice and decided to take the Air Train, instead of taxi due to heavy flooding throughout the city. Yes the rain continued and as you could tell from the pictures, it was quite bad. Nevertheless, the Air Train ride was pleasant, and the walk to the Central station from Hilton Brisbane was acceptable.

Check in was no different from a typical US domestic check-in experience. I used the kiosk, which was easy to navigate and within second, I got my boarding pass, but was not able to change my seat. The normal check-in area was quite orderly despite the rain. The security checkpoint was okay and the agents were friendly and it was interesting to see no boarding pass or ID check. Family and friends can still pick up their relatives and love ones from the gate for the domestic flights. I bought the Premium Economy fare so I got lounge access. I headed towards “the Lounge,” which I was grateful because as I arrived at the lounge, couple flights had to divert to Mackay and things started to get delayed. The Lounge allowed a nice place to relax and the Beef Vegetable Soup and self-service sandwich and salad bar were much welcomed. Free wifi was available and the service was better than Qantas wifi connection at Sydney and Brisbane International.

Our flight was delayed fifty minutes, as the inbound flight from Sydney was being held at SYD due to weather delays. The inbound flight did not arrive till 2:21pm. The 1pm flight was cancelled which resulted in very full flights for both the 2pm and 3pm. Turnaround was very quick and we began boarding at 2:43pm. The boarding process was smooth and priority boarding, as well as row boarding, were strictly enforced, and thing seems to be more orderly. Two F/As were standing at the door checking boarding passes and greeting each passenger, even by name as they glanced at their boarding passes. That was so different from the usual experience in the US, which the F/A was busy in the galley or talking among themselves or avoiding passengers’ eyesight.

We pushed back two minutes later, and headed towards R/W1. We took off at 3:11pm, and due to weather, cabin service did not start till we leveled off at 38,000feet. Our plane was equipped with Live TV, and the F/A had already swiped her card through my screen prior to takeoff. I enjoyed a nice hour of live TV. The system was similar with Jetblue’s first generation of Live TV. But for premium economy passengers, you may want to avoid Row 1 ABC if you want to watch TV. Yes, the legroom was great with no wall in front of your seat, but entertainment was limited to a handheld unit given out after takeoff and collected prior to landing. There were three Premium economy passengers this afternoon, and Row 2DEF ended up as normal economy seats. At 3:27pm, my beverage and food order was taken, and you literally can have as much food and beverage as you want for free. I had a nice Chicken Caesar wrap and a iced Smirnoff vodka lemon drink. The flight went by quickly, and descent began soon at 3:52pm. We landed on R/W16R at 4:17pm, and parked at gate 40 at 4:27pm, just as the rain began to fall.

In conclusion, I had a good experience with Virgin Blue, and the Premium economy product was acceptable. I had an interesting observation here at Australia. For domestic flights, the tow trucks used the left under carriage to push back the plane, instead of the front wheel. Not sure why, but an interesting observation!

I flew Qantas on the return to Brisbane, and purposefully picked flight QF 19, as it was a continuing international flight to Manila, and I could use the nice Qantas first class lounge at Sydney, and also fly an international aircraft.

Planespotting was great this morning, as there were many diversions from Melbourne this morning due to fog. KE’s A330-200 HL7538 and CX’s Airbus A330-300 B-LAG were both sitting in the tarmac, among a few QF’s Boeing 747-400s. Anyway, I had a list of a/c I spotted this morning (feel free to skip them if you are not interested):
    Asiana Boeing 777-200 HL7742
Air Vanuatu Boeing 737-800 Winglet YJ-AV1
Cathay Pacific Airbus A330-300 B-HLP as CX 101
    Air Canada Boeing 777-200LR C-FIUF
Qantas Boeing 747-400 VH-OJU as QF 63 to JNB
Qantas Boeing 747-400 VH-OJL as QF 11 to LAX
Lan Chile’s Airbus A340-300 CC-CQG back to AKL and SCL
    Qantas Boeing 747-400ER VH-OEI to LAX/JFK as QF 107
Qantas Boeing 747-400 VH-OJE diverted from LAX/MEL as QF 26
Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER 9V-SYI divert from MEL
Vietnam Airways Boeing 777-200ER VH-A144 to MEL
Thai Airways Boeing 777-300ER HS-TKA to AKL
    Aerolineas Argentina Airbus A340-200 LZ-ZRA
Qantas Airways’ Boeing 747-400 VH-OEH to HKG
    Malaysian Airlines’ Boeing 747-400 9M-MPO
China Airlines’ Airbus A330-300 B-18311 to TPE
    Air Calin’s Airbus A320-200 F-OJSB
    China Eastern’s Airbus A330-200 B-6122 to Shanghai

Nothing to say much about the flight, except the dreamtime seats were okay for a daytime flight. I like the solo “A” seats. The morning refreshment was very random and not sure why can’t Qantas just offer a proper breakfast or an early lunch. The tray had a bowl of fruit, a choice of Cereals or Warm banana bread with fruit compote, and a choice of mini ham quiche or spinach roll. Very random! Maybe just different cultural eating habits!

Check-in at a very quiet row 8 around 9am! The lanes were all quiet and a friendly CX agent (QF is CX ground handling agent) checked me in. I got the “first” class seat that I requested. I am an Oneworld Emerald and no, you cannot request the seat in advance. I tried asking the agent at HK to input a request on my record, but you really cannot do so. I did online check-in too, but you cannot get a seat at Row 1 or 2 (at least as an OW Emerald). I just went to the airport early and asked. The agent just smiled and said, “I think 1K will be okay with you right!” I smiled back. Nevertheless with most 34Ds changing into 34Bs, it will be harder to do that. So if you folks ask again how I can get a F seat, my answer is, “Just go the airport early and ask politely!” Also it is restricted to CX and Oneworld top-tier elite flyers too! The F cabin did not go out full in both BNE-CNS, and CNS-HKG segment. You really have to ask and request them. The agent will not automatically assign you that seat. Also the F/As on my flight did not close the curtain between F and J, and the service was obvious business class all the way.

Qantas’ Club at Brisbane was nothing special and I did not even take pictures. However the new Brisbane terminal was quite nice. Lots of natural lights, big windows… that’s why you see all the plane pictures. I will love to take some pictures of the V Australia plane, but all US flights have secondary check point, so no entry!

    Plane-spotting:
Singapore Airlines’ Airbus A330-300 9V-STF (At BNE again)
China Airlines’ Airbus A330-300 B-18310 to TPE
Air Vanuatu’s Boeing 737-800 Winglet YJ-AV1 (Spotted at SYD just the day before)
Qantas’ Airbus A330-300 VH-QPE heading to Singapore as QF 51
Qantas’ Boeing 747-400 VH-OJC as QF 15 to LAX (nonstop)
    Air Nugini’s Boeing 757-200 Winglet P2-ANB
    Air Pacific’s Boeing 737-700 Winglet DQ-FJF
Air New Zealand’s Boeing 777-200ER ZK-OKA as NZ 136 to AKL

Our aircraft arrived slightly late from HK around 10:21am from Hong Kong. There was a crew change here, and not too many passengers continued to Cairns. The flight was fairly quiet in general. Flights got a bit fuller at Cairns. The BNE-CNS crew indeed continued to HKG with us, and all the food and beverages were loaded at Brisbane. Boarding began at 11:25am but door was closed on time at 11:40am due the light load. We took off from R/W19 at 11:52am.

Flying time was an hour and fifty-seven minutes, with a cruising attitude of 40,000feet. Routing took us from Brisbane to Gympie, Rockampton, Whitsunday Islands, Mackay, and Cairns. Beautiful view all the way to Cairns! Morning refreshment was served on this flight. Beverage was offered first, followed by the tray with both appetizers and dessert, and then the typical entrée trolleys. Followed by tea/coffee and chocolate service!

    Light Refreshment
    Starter
    Fresh seasonal fruit

    Main Courses
Stir-fried udon noodles with shredded chicken and vegetables
    Or
Risotto with artichoke, peas and button mushrooms with roasted cherry tomatoes

    Dessert
    Chocolate cake with custard sauce
    Tea and Coffee
    102B-2120J <M~J/09>

Descent began at 1:22pm, and landed on R/W15 at 1:49pm, and parked at gate 4 at 1:54pm. The arrival formalities were simple – Cairns arrival turned on left, and transit on the right. There was no security checkpoint, and you can buy duty free goods at Brisbane and bring them to Hong Kong. Cairns’ international airport was quite small, and we were the only flight that afternoon. Indeed we were the last international departure of the day. CX used the reef lounge here.

Boarding recommenced at 2:45pm, and door was closed sixteen minutes later. The same BNE-CNS crew welcomed me aboard again and the F cabin was almost full on this sector with one empty seat. We pushed back a minute later, and then took off from R/W33 at 3:13pm. Flying time was a short six hours and forty-two minutes. Routing took us towards Gulf of Carpentaria at 36,000feet, and then climbed to 38,000feet and crossed the cities of Davao, Cagayande Oro, Cebu and Manila.

A full dinner was offered after takeoff, and there was a full beverage with choice of cashews or olives. Then you get the usual long haul dinner spread. Prior to arrival, sandwiches (Ham & cheese with tomato sauce on Turkish bread or roast beef on wheat) were offered, followed by ice cream cups – Connoisseur’s Vanilla, Strawberry, or Cookies & Cream. No tray is used.

    Dinner
    Starters
Tandoori prawn, seared scallop and smoked salmon with mango salsa
    Mixed salad with Italian vinaigrette

    Main Courses
Grilled beef tenderloin with pumpkin and potato cake, baby zucchini, roasted tomato and onion
    Or
Steamed barramundi with black bean sauce, steamed rice and vegetables
    Or
Roast chicken with tomato mushroom sauce, parmesan rock polenta, carrots and asparagus
    Or
Spinach and ricotta cannelloni with tomato and pumpkin and cheese mornay sauce

    Cheese and Dessert
Cobram Cehddar, South Cape Blue, Tasmanian Heritage washed rind
    Fresh seasonal fruit
Orange and almond cake with King Island Cream

    Tea and Coffee
    Pralines

    Refreshment
    Selected sandwiches
    Or
    Ice Cream
    102B-2121/2124J <M~J/09>

Descent began at 7:27pm HK time, and we landed on R/W7L at 7:55pm. We parked at gate 69 five minutes later.

I hope you enjoy the report!
