  • A few sights from Surabaya: special dedication to the Cina-Surabaya gang on SQT

    In case you're missing home:

Sura dan Buaya! Shark and Crocodile. Surabaya is an amalgmation of those two words. Etymology of the name here:

At the Heroes Monument, the legendary Giant Croc (crikey!, she's a beauty!) and Giant Shark do battle for supremacy

We've arrived: Bandara Juanda at night!

By day: a vast sprawling metropolis of over 5 million people

Just outside the city: the ultimate disaster: Not going to go into it in details but you can read more about the sidoarjo mud tragedy here
This wall was erected to keep the mud out. Note the staggered height, indicating progressive building. It goes for miles and miles around the perimeter of the hole, that started out the size of a grapefruit.

Completely ruined millions of lives: the area around the mudflow reeks of sulfuric odors, and it's an economic disaster

more to come: the nice parts

Little sidestreets adorn much of the outskirts of Surabaya

On our way to the Pandaan Area, in the distance: Mt. Arjuna

A really cool way to get around.

Billboards big and small adorn much of Surabaya. Here's a selection:

But the one to most SURELY SURELY catch the eye of any SQTalker worth his or her salt: is this one......

Hmmm......I wonder if the cake "Kue Lapis Surabaya" (yellow/brown/yellow layers) has anything to do with the city in terms of it's origin?

        Thanks for Sharing!

Actually, Lapis Surabaya is just what people called it but it doesn't have anything to do with its origin... Maybe in the past, we sell too much of kueh lapis then it called Lapis Surabaya...

FYI, Lapis Surabaya also called Spekoek...

I'm not sure where kue lapis surabaya comes from. Funny enough, Surabayan often call this cake as kue spiku or spekoek. They don't call this as kue lapis, let alone kue lapis surabaya.

SQFG, you travel more than I do. Every time I'm in SUB, I only stay on the west side, hopping from one mega malls to another. Always trying to avoid the traffic jam in the city center.

                  Haha.. yeah like those..
I'm just not sure where exactly is royal plaza
I like SUTOS, the location and the building exterior is rather weird. BUT the place is quite hip and the cinemas there is the best I've seen in SUB. The hotel apparently is very chic too, but I can't find the websites for it.

Too bad you can't see "Keindahan Jawa Timur" in SUB, you need to get out of town to experience the greener and cooler side of East Java.

I recognize those malls...one is SUTOS (Surabaya Town Square) with the first XXI Cineplex in Surabaya, while the other one is Royal Plaza, which is located near my in-laws place.

It's along A.Yani and it's just after the flyover from Raya Darmo, before Waru roundabout... Now they have a club called 360 there.. kinda similar to red-box in pakuwon...

But it's a bit hard to travel outside SUB nowadays...due to mudflood and closure of the highway... However, Batu or Tretes or Malang would be a nice place to experience "Keindahan Jawa Timur".. and for MAKAN... He He he...

And a bit of correction for #1 post, it's not heroes monument...the black parts represents the river where they fought... Heroes Monument located in the Old City Centre...near to Kafe Sampoerna...

Agree....luckily I went to Tretes just before the Lapindo mud thingy happened. The only place I travelled to outside SUB (this year) was Mojokerto, a small town around 1.5 hrs from SUB, where my in-laws have many relatives.

I was there around 4-5 mths ago to experience the new XXI Cineplex. Location wise, it's probably not so convenient, and the cinema is the usual XXI standard (still cannot match EX in Jakarta). Lots of good food though and I don't think the hotel was ready at that time.

For cinema-goers, Surabaya opened its second XXI Cineplex in Tunjungan Plaza in June.

Hmmm....the DBL Arena...a hot place nowadays....I heard they invited one NBA star to perform at the spanking new arena.

I only went to one mall this trip - Supermall, but didn't spend much time there. Had to just dash in and get some Diet Coke (iya pak, some things never change)
