  • Holiday Inn Phi Phi Island Part V -leaving the island

One piece of happy news for us was that, towards the end of our stay, we came across a worthy recipient for the cat food we'd transported to the island -the owner thought we were mad (we were out in the midday sun after all) but was extremely grateful for the food, as was the cat we hope!

A final evening shot of nickbot and friends from the hotel (not sure why we're strangely leaning to the RHS,...perhaps the island was tilting!)

Our five day stay had passed by incredibly quickly, and it was soon our final morning -initially, we had booked on the early morning ferry back to Phuket, meaning that whilst we'd get back to Patong for around 1 pm, we'd have to leave the hotel at around 7 am. We decided to elongate our stay slightly and re-arrange to catch the early afternoon ferry, affording us a few extra hours of poolside time before we had to leave. We packed up all of our bags and just took hand luggage to the pool with us (there are showers near the pool), so that housekeeping could clean our room for the next occupants.

Unfortunately, leaving time comes around only too soon, and this is always signalled by the hotel staff performing as little musical ritual that one tends to hear two or three times a day (always nice to hear whilst one relaxes beside the pool and think "thank goodness it's not me that's leaving today!") Sadly, the music today was for us, and we made our way towards the beach for the last time on this trip...

Assisted by hotel staff, we and other guests boarded the longtail boat that would take us on the short hop out into the bay to rendevous with the slightly larger boat that takes you onwards to Ton Sai Bay

That brings to a close another memorable stay at the Holiday Inn Phi Phi Island -as you can probably tell from what I have written, this didn't rank at the top of our previous experiences at the hotel, but it was by no means an unpleasant stay and I can wholeheartedly recommend the hotel to others. I made sure to complete the guest comments sheet in a constructive and comprehensive manner, and hope that other repeat guests who have seen just how good the experience can be would do the same. If anyone is considering a trip to Phi Phi, I'd be only too happy to offer advice in future, as I'm conscious that this hasn't been a particularly in-depth review of the hotel!

The transfer back to Phuket is pretty much exactly the reverse of the journey I described in post #251; it starts with a relatively quiet trip to Ton Sai Bay on a smaller ferry that collects pax from northerly hotels on the island, then once at Ton Sai, one transfers to a much larger boat and joins the bulk of other pax from the island. There's enough time at this point to pop ashore and buy supplies for the ferry journey if required, but instead we decided to stake out some great top deck seats once again!

It was at about this point that I started to feel a little unwell (I think I can trace it back to a meal we'd eaten the previous night),...nothing too serious at this stage, but unfortunately my condition was to worsen over the forthcoming days and continue for the rest of the trip Thankfully, the ferry journey to Phuket was bright and sunny this time -the only rain we encountered during our stay on the island was during the trip out, so for that we were extremely thankful!

    • You continue to do great work Mr. nickbot, I look forward to the rest.

However, when you write - "The Holiday Inn Resort, Phi Phi Island is a pretty special place for mrs nickbot and I, because it was there, on our first visit back in 2003, that we got engaged" - I must say traveling with Mrs. nickbot before she was Mrs. nickbot. tsk, tsk, tsk what have the young come to.

That must have been a very serious dose of chilli to have effects for your whole trip...!

HIs in Asia, Thailand in particular seem to be of a much higher standard than the ones I've stayed at in the US (never stayed at a HI in Europe). Interesting how brands are perceived/marketed across different markets. Another good example is Sheraton - mostly ho hum business hotels in the US but in Asia they are luxury 5 star hotels.

Couldn't agree more KeithMEL and florianwagner, both the HI on Phi Phi and in Patong are streets ahead of many of the EU Holiday Inns I've stayed in. To be honest, for stays in the UK (unless I know the hotel or have done my research) I tend to opt for Holiday Inn Express hotels as one tends to be guaranteed a certain standard of room, whereas with many UK HIs it can be a bit of a gamble.

                    • Holiday Inn Phuket revisited (Main Wing) Part I

After a smooth transfer, we arrived back at the Holiday Inn in Patong and checked in at the Busakorn reception. The receptionist then began to escort us to our room, but I was dismayed to see that after walking past the Busakorn pool, we turned left towards the main wing I mentioned my concerns at this point, to which she replied "We've upgraded you to a sea front room". I decided to reserve judgement until we saw the room, but to me the main wing=noisy

We were pleasantly surprised with the decor and layout of the room, but were concerned about the noise from the beach road, the large family pool below and the bar/restaurant immediately below us. Again, a nice effort in accommodating us in a pleasant room, but akin to our stay the previous week, we'd have been happier in the room that we'd booked three months previously and liaised with the GM about! Whilst all three of our noise concerns turned out to be justified, the double glazing on the patio doors blocked out pretty much all of the street and pool noise; I think KeithMEL would have liked the atmosphere in the common areas of the hotel, but to us this was too raucous and lively (there were people watching football in the bar and cheering for goodness sake,...such things should be banned ) Ahh well, only a two night stay, and hopefully by next time the nickbots can retreat to the calm oasis of the poolside villas once the renovation programme is complete.

On the plus side, the room itself was lovely, and as it turns out we spent most of our time in it rather than being out and about, so it served its purpose.

General room layout, viewed from the balcony

Close-up of the bed, detailing slightly phallic arrangement of cushions (or is that just my dirty mind?!)

Whilst I've seen the "bathroom adjoining main room via shuttered window" arrangement before in a few trip reports here on SQTalk, I've never stayed in a room that was layed out in this way, so this was a bit of a treat for a bath connoisseur such as myself! Much to mrs nickbot's disapproval, I took this as an excuse or rather compulsion to enter the bathroom Dukes of Hazard style (i.e. via the window) on pretty much every occasion I needed to go in there -little things please little minds

nickbot's favourite feature of the room!

Plenty of toiletries supplied (including mouthwash etc. not present in Busakorn Wing rooms)

                      View towards balcony

Large TV (well, large by my standards), DVD player, tea/coffee making facilities and (free) minibar fridge below

Sofa/relaxation area, featuring tired mrs nickbot!

"Sea View" and view of family pool

                      • Holiday Inn Phuket revisited (Main Wing) Part II

Once we'd settled in, we decided to head to Tesco Lotus (about 20 or so minutes away by TukTuk) in order to do some final shopping -we both like supermarkets whilst abroad, and Tesco Lotus is basically the largest on Phuket island (not to mention being much cheaper than offerings in Patong).

mrs nickbot in the TukTuk as we whizzed down the beach front road

When we got to Tesco, we were both pretty hungry (we'd not really eaten anything since breakfast on Phi Phi), so we headed upstairs to the food court. The food here was super cheap, we had a rather delicious meal of green curry, chicken with rice and a can of Diet Coke for about £1.20 in total.

Our cheap evening meal at Tesco

Unfortunately, I probably should've stuck to more bland food, because the green curry did my stomach no favours...

Two chickens, laughing (despite their blatant adversity) at nickbot's dietary foolishness

We returned to the hotel by taxi and turned in for the night -the sounds from the restaurant and music from the bar beneath us did nothing for my stomach pain induced insomnia, but eventually I drifted off to sleep in the extremely comfortable bed

The next day, due to the weather not being fantastic for our final day in Patong, we opted to walk around and sightsee rather than our primary objective of lazing beside the pool. We took the opportunity to get some washing done (only THB 50 per kilo!) and also shop for a few more DVDs and other bits and bobs.

Patong pussycat, guarding his owner's truck

Typical Patong street view, note the omnipresent crazy Thai wiring!

We returned to the hotel and set about packing for our onward journey -as we only had one night in Bangkok ahead of us, followed by a hand luggage only stopover in Singapore, we decided to pack tactically at this stage for the whole journey home. At this stage, the family of ducks made a reappearance after their enforced confinement in left luggage whilst we visited Phi Phi (sorry we didn't take you to the paradise island Mr. Quak and Mr. DuckDuckpb3, perhaps your new owners will be more kind to you!) We decided a duck line-up photograph was required...

LH FCL/FCT duck crew enjoying the HI balcony

After this photograph was taken, but before the duck crew were safely packed away, I had a rare moment of (self professed of course) brilliance in playing along to Razorlight's "America" purely with the aid of the squeaks from 6 ducks, two hands and one foot. Okay, not strictly "purely" with the aid of those things, a beer or two may have lubricated the creative juices somewhat I'm sad to say that this wasn't caught on camera (mrs nickbot's fear of technology strikes once again), but for the right price I might be persuaded to recreate it with the four remaining ducks for my loyal readers as a special treat for being so patient during my slooooow updating of this thread. It'll have to wait until the main report is finished though!

Our post packing evening was rounded off with a sunset walk along the beach...

A final self portrait of the nickbots in Patong

View of the Main Wing pool, restaurant (below) and sea view rooms above

We did pop out later in the evening to pick up our washing and visit Burger King for some plain food (!) but I'm afraid I wasn't really feeling up to taking many photographs. We returned to the hotel and thankfully had a quieter night's sleep than previously.

The following morning, it was up for an early breakfast, which we took in the Busakorn Wing restaurant, and an early taxi pick-up to catch our flight up to Bangkok. Once again, we were pleased with our stay in Patong, but this could have been improved both by having our correct room allocation and by me not being struck with stomach problems Despite our very nice room, I wholeheartedly stand by my recommendation to others considering this hotel to stay in the Busakorn Wing if at all possible, and specifically in the pool access villa rooms (that is, of course, unless you're paying 1 THB per night, then you take what you're given folks!)

Far more fun to do that at the Ned Kelly bar (might or might not be its actual name but it's certainly Ned Kelly-themed - apols for defective memory..) at that nightlife strip a few blocks away from the hotel. Where you can cheer your heart out without running the risk of pissing off anyone. (unless cheering for the 'wrong' side ). Watched the World Cup there when I was in Phuket in 2006... loved the atmosphere and camaraderie. Good times.

Don't worry I hardly watch soccer myself but jumped on to the World Cup bandwagon last time round.
