After take off, cabin service began with a round of beverages. Champagne was available in the PEY cabin.

The Champagne was served in a plastic cup, along with a large packet of almonds and cashews.

Meal service was next. It was great to have a printed menu to peruse...

    Amenities available on request...

Dinner was served on this flight (The inbound SIN-SYD sector had breakfast service).

A refreshment would be served after landing. It was nice to see detailed write-ups of the wines being served as well.

Complimentary spirits were available (In both PEY and Y), including their signature Singapore Sling.

    Coffee, tea and soft beverages.

For PEY, it was possible to pre-order a BTC meal. There were a few selections available ex-SYD, but none were particularly appealing to me, so I stuck with the menu options. It was also possible to pre-order one of the menu selections, which I did.

      I pre-ordred the Beef Bourguignon...

This came on a large tray, with a cloth napkin and a combination of ceramic and plastic tableware.

It was nice to have a cloth napkin, although the napkin itself was about half the size of a J napkin...

I accompanied the beef with a red wine, which was served in a plastic cup.

The beef was delicious, as was the starter and the dessert.

In terms of both food and catering, this was a clear step up from economy catering, with good presentation and premium tableware.

      The main casserole was ceramic...

...with the smaller dishes made of high quality plastic, in a matching colour very similar to the main casserole.

I was quite happy with the quality and presentation of the meal. Given the price of PEY compared to Y, it was great to finally have a differentiated meal offering, rather than the Y meals initially offered when SQ first launched PEY.

That said, on my wishlist for SQ PEY would be proper glassware, which some other airlines, including Qantas, do offer in the PEY cabin.

After meal service, I asked for a G&T...

...and checked out this month's Krisworld, which had a great selection of movies and TV...

I could have spent the entire flight catching up on recent movies.

There were also many Singapore-themed programmes...

        ...including Kallang Roar...

...Every Singaporean Son, about the NS BMT experience...

...as well as LKY in his own words.

Our routing today would pass close to Uluru / Ayers Rock.

Sighting Uluru from cruising altitude was something I always strived to do, but it was exceedingly difficult to do so. I saw Uluru from on BA16 SYD-SIN last year, but the stars had to align, so to speak for this to happen. Would I see it again today?

Unlimited onboard wifi was complimentary for all Krisflyer members. In terms of flight path, a quick check on flightradar24 on my iPhone showed that we were on track...

I also could not resist checking the flight progress of QF1, on a very similar track not far behind...

Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperating that day. Out the window, all I saw was this.

          Somewhere out there was Uluru...

I peered out, searching for gaps in the cloud, but no luck. Not this time.

And to rub salt into the wound, not long after, the cloud cover magically cleared up...

Oh well. Maybe next time I'll be able see what I saw while when I flew over Uluru on BA16 last year.

Later in the flight, I took a stroll through the Y cabin, walking the length of the main deck. This was a 100% full flight in both Y...

            ...and PEY.

By then, we were approaching the Northern coast of the Australian continent.

The sun was setting as we crossed the coastline, not far from Broome...

              What beautiful colours...

About 2 hours before arrival, a refreshment was served...

                A ham and cheese toastie...

This came piping hot, and was quite tasty.

I asked for pineapple juice with ice, and it was served in a paper cup.

We were over the island of Bali...

...with QF1 on a slightly different routing, not far behind...

Final approach into Singapore, with great views out the left side windows...

Bedok Jetty clearly visible off East Coast Park...

A very smooth landing on Runway 02L.

We parked at the T3 B gates, close to Arrival Immigration. As usual, there was no queue to speak of at the passport gates, and I whizzed through the passportless entry gates, where all you you had to do was look at the cameras.

The plane had touched down at 9:22pm and was at the gate by 9.27pm. I was at off the plane and at baggage claim by 9.40pm. I was expecting a bit of a wait for luggage.

To my pleasant surprise, the belt began to move as soon as I reached the belt, and moments later bags began emerging. My bag was out within a couple of minutes. Now that was very quick!

After that, it was a short drive home, ready to celebrate SG60 National Day on August 9th.

Overall, I had a great flight on SQ222 SYD-SIN. I was very happy with Singapore Airlines Premium Economy product. The Airbus A380 remains my favourite aircraft to fly on. The PEY seat and cabin ambience was excellent and catering was very good. Cabin crew on this flight were excellent, with IFM Lawrence and his wonderful team of cabin crew taking great care of pax onboard.

What could be done better? The only thing I missed on this flight was proper glassware. I felt that the plastic cups, with ugly thick rims detracted from the premium feel of the PEY service concept.

Apart from that, this was SQ at its best, a wonderful way to head home to Singapore to celebrate National Day.

                  Thanks for reading!
