  • Turkish A359 Business Class to Italy: Rome, Amalfi Coast and a Glimpse of Istanbul

Just back in Singapore after a memorable trip to Italy and Turkiye with Mrs yflyer!

In May 2025, we celebrated a milestone wedding anniversary by heading to Italy and Turkiye for a 3 week vacation. We explored Rome, Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast and Bologna, then Sirmione on Lake Garda, before departing from Milan's Malpensa Airport to head to Istanbul for a 3 day stopover on our way back to Singapore.

We flew SIN-IST-FCO then MXP-IST-SIN on Turkish Airlines Business Class, with all sectors operated by their Airbus A350-900 aircraft, except for IST-FCO, which was an A321.

Turkish had very attractive sale fares for the dates we were looking at, and as an added bonus, TK would also provide a free Istanbul stopover, with 2 complimentary hotel nights in a 5 star hotel as part of the deal. The hotel offered to us in Istanbul was the Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus, and I added a 3rd night's stay with a Hilton redemption.

I had previously flown TK's A359 Economy Class to Melbourne and had great flights (TR here). I was looking forward to checking out TK's Business Class, especially their much-lauded catering.

It was approaching the busy tourist season in Rome, and everywhere else in Italy for that matter, and visitors were back in force. We braved the crowds to revisit Rome's many attractions.

"If this is what it's like now, I can't imagine what it is like when it's peak season" I remarked to Mrs yflyer.

Mrs yflyer had another reason to head to Rome this year: she was Roman Catholic, and 2025 was a special Jubilee Year for Catholics, with many pilgrims and faithful heading to Rome to walk through some or all of the 4 Holy Doors open at 4 Basilicas there. She also wrote in to request tickets to attend a Papal General Audience at Vatican City, where the Pope addresses an audience of typically thousands or 10's of thousands.

When we booked the the trip, it was Pope Francis presiding, however, sadly Pope Francis passed away earlier this year, with a new Pope, Leo the XIV, elected soon afterwards. We were very elated and privileged to attend the first General Audience of Pope Leo's Pontificate.

After Rome, we headed to Sorrento and then the Amalfi Coast. What amazing views, hospitality and cuisine!

Bologna was next -- many friends told us that Bologna was the food capital of the region, and they were not wrong.

After that, we headed to Sirmione, a picturesque old town on the banks of Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake, for a few days before heading to Milan Malpensa Airport for our flight to Istanbul.

We had 3 days to explore Istanbul before our flight back to Singapore. This was our first time there and it was a fascinating glimpse into the history, culture and cuisine of the city, which has a mindboggling history dating back thousands of years, to the days of Constantinople and the Ottoman Empire.

Along the way, we had lots of good food, and there were great opportunities for walks, hikes and runs.

Our flight, TK209 to Istanbul, was a 10.15am departure out of Changi Airport T1.

The T1 drop-off was not busy when our Grab dropped us off at 8am.

There was a short queue at the TK Economy bag-drop but the Business Class check-in counter was clear.

We were through the passportless immigration gates, and into T1 airside area, within minutes.

The designated lounge for TK in T1 was the Marhaba Lounge, which I visited the last time I flew TK to Melbourne, but TK is part of Star Alliance, so rather than head there, we took the Airtrain to T3 to use the SQ SilverKris Lounge there.

It didn't take more than 10-15 min to get there from T1, including the walk from the Airtrain station to the lounge, so it was quite do-able if you got to the airport early enough.

The walk from the T3 airtrain station to the SilverKris lounge wasn't too bad. In any case, we would find out later that there was much more walking to be done to get from point A to point B at Istanbul's massive new airport.

The T1 Marhaba Lounge was a decent business class lounge, but the SQ T3 SilverKris Lounge was in a whole different league.

A warm greeting and a quick scan of the boarding pass, and we were through to the Business Class section of the lounge...

This was a very large lounge, that was not too crowded when we were there.

Full service manned bar just to the right of the entrance, along with an open seating area.

We turned left, past the customer service desks, into the main section of the lounge.

        The main lounge area...

        Bar counter-style seating...

        Quiet seating area...

        Limited airside views...

The lounge had a separate sleeping room with loungers in cubicles.

There were also shower rooms, with empty shower rooms available for use at the time we were there.

We spent about 30 min in the T3 SKL before heading back to T1 via Airtain get to the holding room for our flight. Given how good the T3 SKL was, it was definitely worth it to hop over to T3 to use that lounge before our flight.

Our gate for TK209 was C26, at the far end of the satellite C gates in T1. The Marhaba Lounge was in the D section of T1, the other side of the terminal, so it would have been quite a trek from that lounge as well.

Operating today's flight was Airbus A350-900 registration TC-LGV, a 10 month old aircraft first delivered in July 2024.

                    Boarding commenced with Business Class...

The cabin was laid out in staggered 1-2-1 layout, with Stelia Symphony seats, similar to those on SQ's Regional J product.

My seat was 2A by the window...

...with Mrs yflyer across the aisle from me in 2D...

This seat had a side table and storage compartment...

                    Large IFE screen...

Deep and tall footwell (perhaps a tad narrow) with space underneath for a cabin bag.

Window seats alternated between seat by the window and side table by the window...

Pressure-sensitve seat controls arranged in a row along the side. As the IFE screen was a touchscreen, I did not use the handheld IFE controller at all.

The bulkhead window and middle seats all had a larger footwell, however, the cabin crew tended to put items on the center bulkhead and spend time there, so the trade-off was slightly less privacy. I would personally not choose these first row seats as the regular footwell space was sufficient for me. However, some people have remarked that the footwells were too narrow, so they might prefer the bulkhead seats for the larger footwells.

                      Pre-departure beverages...

Champagne was not presented on the tray, but available on request.

My 2nd glass of the day...

Each seat came with an amenity kit.

TK has so many different styles and colours of amenity kits.

I didn't open mine, but Mrs yflyer did. Amenity kit contents...

There were also slippers and a shoe bag to stow your shoes when you wore the slippers.

                      Noise cancelling headphones...

I thought they were quite comfortable to wear, with good sound quality.

                      A/C power and USB charging.

Turkish Airlines has an onboard chef on their long haul sectors. Before take-off the chef came round to give out menues, and later came round to take our main course orders.

Wet towel prior to take off (I believe it was a hot towel, but I can't be 100% sure, because on the return sector, it was a cold towel that was given out to pax.)

We pushed back, and passed by an SQ 737-8 MAX as we taxi'ed to our departure runway.

                        Take-off from Runway 02L...

Nice views of Changi Village and Pulau Ubin as we climbed out...

I leaned forward from my seat to take in the view...

Later the seatbelt signs went off, but I kept my seatbelt on (Always advisable when seated!).

I did detach the chest strap from the seatbelt, leaving just the waist strap, which was a lot more comfortable than leaving the chest strap on throughout the flight.

The chest strap retracted into the top of the seat. I only reattached it at top of descent, when preparations for landing started.

The seat was quite comfortable in lounging position...

                          The seat reclined flat...

...to fit for foot cubby hole to form a flat bad.

                            Fold out tray table...

This was stable and quite large.

On bathroom in front of the cabin, to the left of the cockpit door.

                            Molton Brown toiletries...

Overall cabin ambience was very good, with good privacy for all pax.

The IFE system was quite comprehensive, with movies, television, live TV and music.

10 hours 25 min to Istanbul today...

3 clear and sharp camera views provided...

                              3 live TV channels...

                              ...including CNN International...

Wifi was available onboard. For passengers in Business, this was complimentary for Miles & Smiles members. If you were not a member, you had unlimited complimentary messaging and 1 GB of data usage. There were also paid data plans.
