  • February Tropical Paradise - United Airlines Boeing 777-300ER to Hawaii (SFO-HNL-SFO)

    Hi guys,

It has been at least 7 months since actually traveling. Initially, I was supposed to travel on Turkish Airlines from SFO to visit Rome for the first time along with a touristanbul tour and hotel on the way back on TK's 77W (which seems to be a Winter occurrence).

Unfortunately, due to different personal reasons, we waited so long to the point TK's prices spiked abnormally for mid February and President's week in the US that the $700+ turned to beyond $1500+ and $2000+. Only reason I riled about that is because this is an off peak season, there's absolutely no reason for SFO-Europe flights to be treated like it's Summer or Christmas/New Year's holiday whereas LAX was still cheap (and for convenience reasons I did not want to do that just to add unneeded stress to the trip). Sad because I missed a golden opportunity to ride a 9-abreast 77W which you just can't get these days from SFO (i.e. BR, KE) and footrest. There's always next year, and I hope TK can (like previous Winters) brings back the 777-300ER to SFO. I'd be elated if that happens.

Because of these issues, our initial plan was actually to go to Hawaii in November 2023, and due to a relative's wedding, got pushed to February 2026 (next year), but now it's a flip flop so well it's happening now. If I had gone in February 2026, I would be spending fewer PTO days from work to save for a religious October 2026 trip to India all relative to my mom's school schedule if she has President's week off (and it doesn't happen yearly).

It's been 13 years since I've been to Hawaii, and that was during July 4th weekend back in 2013, in my third year of college, which I took United's 767-400 and returning on their 757 (narrow body, redeye).

Now United has put still a mixture of widebodies and since the pandemic, and still as of today, they fly one daily Boeing 777-300ER to Honolulu and onwards to Guam. I've deliberately decided to take the Boeing 777-300ER both ways. While going, it's a morning flight reaching at a very reasonable time in the afternoon (1:30PM) and a redeye reaching SFO around 6:30AM.

Many of you probably remember back in July 2022, I took United's Boeing 777-300ER from SFO to New York (Newark/EWR) and back, because back then United was still rebuilding their post pandemic international network and at that time I was initially scheduled on a Boeing 787-10 both ways but a swap to a 77W, which was there back then on many EWR-SFO flights - luckily for me they were on United's newest 77W (N2250U and N2251U, both sporting the new livery). Not the case after 2023 and beyond for now. It was a 10-across and actually the seats were not bad at all. I liked that there was an IFE even for a short hop.

This year, my mom and I decided to travel to Hawaii and I booked the Boeing 777-300ER both ways, so even though I missed TK's version (both with the same Wifi provider), UA's is pretty good, too. Just the only difference - Treated like domestic though on a widebody with IFE and escaping to a warm climate. The trip will last about 5 days (Monday, Feb 17 to Sat, Feb 22).

More pictures and details will come in the next post and in the coming days.

    Flight: United Airlines flight UA1175
    Route: San Francisco - Honolulu
    Aircraft: N2332U (Boeing 777-300ER, 8.1 years old)
    Livery: Old
Date of Departure: February 17 (9:30AM), Arrival February 17 (1:20PM)
    Seat: 48A (Economy Class)
Configuration: 3-class (United Polaris Business, Premium Plus/Premium Economy, Economy)

Our journey began at the SFO International terminal. All check-in was done online, and just a bag drop. Started on a Monday morning which was the President's Day holiday. My mom has the whole week off and I took the week off my job after what's been a long 7 months without a trip.

Heading to the G-gate concourse where most Star Alliance carriers (other than Turkish Airlines and Air India which use the A gates) such as United, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, EVA Air, Swiss, and ANA use.

TSA Pre was relatively quick and we got to the concourse no more than 5 minutes later.

The G gate concourse looks far nicer with more food choices and a garden.

    Our flight to Honolulu.

Here is our bird which will take us on a 5 hour hop to HNL (N2332U), which arrived from Brisbane, docked at the G gate concourse.

An EVA Air Boeing 777-300ER that arrived also in the early hours, but would later get docked elsewhere before its flight around 12PM.

Closeup from the garden hearing the loud 777 sounds of our 77W.

SFO G-gates have a nice garden and overlook to watch planes, which is something you don't see in the A-concourse.

Singapore Airlines' A350-900. I'll be taking SQ31 in May. This reg was 9V-SJG (which my parents took a couple of months ago).

For President's Day week, it's quite crowded, but not as crowded as compared to peak season.

Another United Boeing 777-300ER parked next to our's, but in a new livery - N2749U, which would head to Beijing an hour later after we depart for HNL.

Boarding was organized by group numbers, but I fail to understand why it's always chaotic. There needs to be more organization in how queues are organized.

        Around 9AM boarding began

        Polaris Business class seats.

Economy Class seats 3-4-3. Even though it's pretty tight for other carriers, United's is not as bad as it seems and I've seen this first hand even from SFO-EWR-SFO back in 2022.

My seat was 48A with the neighboring 77W.

        Accessing United's entertainment system

A pretty good selection of movies.

        Scrolling through collections.

Lots of podcasts on this flight.

        Lots of games for kids.

In the comedy section, lots of comedy and SNL is actually believe it or not, part of it. This year it's their 50th anniversary which just over the weekend they just released it.

SNL as I alluded to earlier.

Pushback began right on schedule at 9:30AM

Pushed all the way 2 gates down and the GE90's started up.

A bit of a long taxi to the runway but we took off around 9:55AM

Cruising in the clouds but taking a sharper left turn as the route was towards Honolulu.

A blanket was offered at every seat if you wanted to sleep.

United's Wifi was also available, by Panasonic (like Singapore Airlines' planes and selected 777-300ER and what Turkish also has, which I was hoping to fly).

More of the inflight maps in "Play" mode

          The world clock.

Flight time was actually 4.5 hours.

          Window view

Pilot's view, like you'd see on Voyager 3D maps.

          The cabin during inflight service.

Cruising over the Pacific. The first 30-40 minutes were pretty turbulent, but eventually eased up.

United's domestic service on a 777-300ER. Snacks and coffee. Not too bad.

Wifi was a very reasonable $10 and was pretty good. I've only personally had good experience with Panasonic Wifi.

Lavatory visit. They've kept it relatively clean.

          Almost there at HNL:

Clear blue skies not too far from Hawaii, but landing in Hawaii would not be so clear.

Got to check out more of the entertainment system.

International selection of movies. While good, doesn't beat the same level of content you'd get on Emirates, Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines (i.e. Tamil, Telegu, Kannada regional language movies as examples)

            Drama movies

While the captain did not come with an announcement (odd for any flight), we began our descent into HNL. An important piece of information is that if you land in HNL, you need to fill out a form and then turn it into the flight crew before landing. Doesn't matter your citizenship status. It is required whether or not you have anything to declare on arrival.

            Descent began around 12:20PM

            Cruising into heavy clouds.

            Oahu Island.

Landing into a mostly cloudy Honolulu (Daniel K. Inouye Airport)

Landed around 12:35PM. Taxi to the gate was relatively quick (less than 5 minutes)

            Deplaning at HNL

            Premium Economy on United

            Polaris Business Class

            Honolulu Airport

N2332U which would head to GUM later on. UA1175 heads from SFO-GUM via HNL. Then returns back to HNL the next day for its redeye flight back to SFO (which I will be taking too in a few days).

Japan Airlines Boeing 787 at HNL. HNL is an old airport but it has an indoor and outdoor part.

Headed straight to baggage claim and got the shuttle to our hotel. To be continued...

After picking up our baggage from baggage claim, we proceeded to our booked shuttle. The weather was a mix of sun and clouds but eventually the weather couldn't make up its mind so it rained from 4PM onwards to around 9PM.

Downtown Honolulu on a mostly cloudy Monday afternoon.

              Waikiki

Our hotel was at the Hilton Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa. Not to be confused with Hawaiian Village, which is far more expensive.

While we did reach the Hilton and checked in around 2:30PM, our room was not ready, so instead we dropped our baggage at the bell desk & walked to the Royal Hawaiian Center (mall) about 10 minutes from our hotel. It was about a 10-15 minute walk and thankfully we made it without much rain impeding our plans.

PF Changs - Fried rice and mapo tofu along with a strawberry pomegranate drink. Quality was excellent.

Lobby pictures at the Hilton Waikiki Beach, Resort and Spa hotel

After an Uber ride, we got to our room, 3514, which had 2 Queen beds and had an Ocean View

This also had a walk-in shower with adjustable handles and a standard shower.

Next day morning and definitely the rest of this trip, we were greeted with nothing but sunshine and warm temperatures. Beautiful ocean view from the 35th floor

Breakfast at the Hilton Mac 24/7 cafe. The name is contradictory as its not 24/7. Waffles, pancakes, fresh fruit and scrambled eggs shared with my mom and very reasonable price overall. Great quality

We would next take a trek to the Hilton Hawaiian Village to go on a submarine ride.

Waikiki Beach just off the Hilton Hawaiian Village hotel

We would then depart on the ship which would later transfer us to the Atlantis submarine.

Closer to 2:45PM, we returned to Waikiki Beach right around the Hilton Hawaiian Village side.

We later took a Waikiki Trolley Pink Line to Ala Moana, Hawaii's shopping mall - a mixture of indoor and outdoor retails, restaurants and other spaces. It has about 5 stories and as even our tour guide quoted, one of the largest shopping malls in the world.

This part you could really feel the humidity, albeit very tolerable.

With Tuesday being a beautiful day unlike Monday, we took the trolley back to Waikiki Beach just to watch the sunset

Downtown Waikiki - International Market Place, another outdoor shopping center, along with Royal Hawaiian Center too.

We took a shortcut where we could see surfboards on both sides.

                      Golden hour around 6:15PM

Beautiful sunset despite a lot of high cloud cover.

Right after this, we went to the International Market Place and from the top floor we could watch a Polynesian dance, which mainly consisted of fire rituals.

Took a trek to where we stayed back in July 2013 - Waikiki Marriott for dinner, which has 3 ABC stores. This time it was far more expensive. How times have changed.

Day 3 started with enjoying the serene garden after breakfast right next to our breakfast spot at the Hilton Waikiki Beach

We decided to do some exploring of Honolulu ourselves via the LeaLea trolley (Chinatown, some of the palaces from outside, shrines).

Journey started from Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center

                        Hawaii State Capitol Building

Next stop was Foster Botanical Gardens and a Buddhist Temple shrine, unfortunately was closed for the day.

I learned that these chickens are actually 'free range'

Buddhist Temple shrine I was referring to.

Instead of taking the trolley around and going to Chinatown, it was a short walk away.

This shrine was called the Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii

You could go inside the shrine here.

We made it as far as the Chinatown Cultural Plaza, next to Downtown Honolulu

We had a snack at a Chinese restaurant since most of the days we have a good breakfast and early dinner.

                        Dim sum (custard bun),

                        Downtown Honolulu

Iolani Palace State Monument. We decided not to enter it but we learned from our tour guide this would have a lot of deep history related to Hawaii and not just the kings and queens.

Towards the evening after a ride back to Royal Hawaiian Center, we went on a sunset ride to Ala Moana State Beach to see the sunset though by the time we got there it was a little past sunset.

Sunset around 6:30PM in February like my parents also seen last February in Trivandrum.

                        The beaches facing downtown Honolulu.

The second-to-last full day actually began with an organized tour around the Island - the cheapest but worth it. It was around Oahu Island.

The first stop was the Halona Blowhole where as the waves increase in length, a wisp/spout occurs at that point on the rock.

                          Makapu'u Lookout

                          More beaches and mountains

This mountain you'd have to squint to look at where the face and eyes are. The scratches are all from the heavy rain that does accumulate over those mountains

Part of the trip also included a stop to Kuilma Farm that had a fresh selection of fruits and even had a fried banana

More beaches on the way to the North Shore

                            Sunset Beach in Hawaii

                            Waimea Bay

This is one of those beaches where you could see turtles come at different wave heights.

Our last stop of the tour included the Dole Plantation which I also came in July 2013. Dole has quite some history even before Hawaii was part of the US. This is where most fruits in the US come from (namely bananas, pineapples, etc).

Helemano Plantation which had a restaurant but even after COVID never reopened.
