  • 3 Cities 4 Airlines: SIN-MEL-SYD-AKL-SIN on SQ A359, VA 737, LA (LATAM) 787, NZ 787

In late August and early September this year I headed to Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland for a series of business events. It was a great opportunity to check out airlines that I had not flown in a while, and in the case of LATAM, an airline I had never flown before.

I flew Singapore Airlines to Melbourne on their regional A359 in Economy, before heading to Sydney on Virgin Australia's 737 in business class.

My next sector was LATAM's 787 service between Sydney and Auckland, with continuation to Santiago, Chile. When both Qantas and Air New Zealand have many flights between Sydney and Auckland, the prospect of checking out LATAM's 787 was just too irresistible to pass up, although I did hedge my bet by booking LA800 on a QF codeshare (My idea was that since my ticket was a QF codeshare, it might be easier to change to another QF flight if needed, or if the LATAM aircraft went tech.).

I flew back to Singapore from Auckland on Air New Zealand's 787 in economy. This was my first time flying long haul on Air NZ, although I did have very fond memories of a flight in an NZ 747 from Auckland to Sydney many years back, in 2011, in the nose of their 747 business class cabin, which only happened because there was a volcanic eruption that caused most other flights to be cancelled.

No runs in this trip report because I injured my knee in Melbourne, and was limping around in Sydney, although I did recover enough to take long walks in Auckland.

It was nice to be back in Auckland after along absence. The place was noticeably more multicultural than before, especially in terms of dining options. I had many memorable meals there, and checked out several cocktail bars as well, including one which became my favourite, where I returned multiple times during my stay.

Singapore Airlines SQ247 SIN-MEL was an 8.40pm departure.

I headed to Jewel quite early in the evening for dinner with Mrs yflyer and the family before the flight.

There are a stupendous number of dining options at Jewel. I suspect a large proportion of people in Jewel aren't actually flying anywhere. They're just there to dine and shop.

We dined at Royal Host, which serves Japanese-style Western food.

There was link bridge to T3 very close to the restaurant.

After dinner, it was just a short stroll across the link bridge...

    ...to the T3 departure area.

I checked the seating plan on the self-check in kiosk...

Good...the seats next to mine were still empty. When travelling in economy, an empty seat next to you dramatically increases the odds of a comfortable flight. And if a row of 3 is empty, then you've just struck the airline lottery!

The airside area was busy, as usual...

A quick stop at the T3 Krisflyer Gold Lounge...

The lounge was not too busy at 7.15pm...

...but you could see that it was starting to fill up, especially as the evening progressed.

      The buffet spread...

      Dim sum...

      Fried fish with vinegar sauce...

      Stir-fried egg with tomato...

      Fried rice...

Spaghetti with garlic sausage and pumpkin cream sauce...

The liquor selection was adequate but nothing special...

Just one red and one white wine. Why no sparkling, SQ?

        Beer, soft drinks and mixers...

        Live laksa station...

        Yum...

There were restrooms and showers in the lounge.

A final G&T before heading to the gate...

Operating SQ247 this evening was Airbus A350-900 registration 9V-SHT...

This was a 3+ year old aircraft, in SQ's 2-class medium haul configuration, with 40 business class seats arranged 1-2-1...

...and 263 economy class seats, laid out 3-3-3...

          The bulkhead Y seats...

          Row 55 emex Y seats...

Also note the preferred row 56A/K window seats, with a missing seat in front.

The row 56A armrest is fixed whereas the 56 B/C armrest is movable.

Row 55 bulkhead seats. 55D/E has a movable armest. The 55G armrest is fixed.

My seat was in row 67. Each seat came with a pillow and blanket.

No underseat obstructions, but no footrest either.

Very good recline by Y standards.

            The bathroom...

            Sensor operated taps...

            Toothbrushes in the drawer...

It was not a particularly full flight today.

The IFE was one of the newest versions of Krisworld...

There were manual buttons for volume control, light and call buttons, along with USB charging...

              A/C power...

              Seat pocket contents...

Complimentary unlimited inflight wifi was available to all Krisflyer members.

              The now familiar safety video...

Views of the Singapore coastline out the right side windows as we took off...

I continued to explore the IFE after take-off...some programs featured Changi Airport...

                and SQ cabin crew...

This was August, so there were also NDP songs showcased...

I was pleasantly surprised by the latest version of the inflight map, which had very comprehensive info displays...

There was an info bar on the top...

...which could be expanded to show even more information...

                ...including aircraft rego!

                  Hot towels were handed out...

There were quite a number of empty seats in the Y cabin. More importantly, the 2 seats next to mine remained empty.

I would have 3 seats to myself on this red-eye. Yippee!

Some amenities were available via the IFE.

SQ looks to be planning to rollout electronic menus on the IFE, but this was not available on this flight.

But it did look to be possible to purchase (or at least browse) KrisShop on the IFE.

                  The drink trolley came round...

It had been a long time since I had a Singapore Sling onboard. Very refreshing!

                    Immediately after that, dinner service...

Two choices of main, a western selection, and Oriental-style chicken with rice. I picked the chicken.

                    This looked really good!

I paired my meal with a glass of of red...

The smoked salmon starter was pleasant enough...

                    The chicken was very satisfying...

Dessert was Udders salted caramel ice cream...very good too.

After dinner, it was time to rest...

                      Cabin lights were dimmed...

One final G&T as a nightcap (I asked for it with a lemon slice...)...

I lay down on my 3-seater and slept very well...

Prior to arrival, a snack was served...

This was an Old Chang Kee mushroom and potato puff...

It was served piping hot. I found it very tasty...

                        13 minutes left to run...

                        We landed just before dawn.

What a wonderful flight on SQ247 SIN-MEL: The aircraft was new, and the cabin product, F&B and cabin crew were excellent. I am sure having 3 seats to myself also helped. I slept soundly and arrived in as good shape as I could have hoped for.

Queues in MEL airport were fairly quick as well, as passport checks were now automated and camera based. The only bottleneck was at baggage claim, as well as border food/quarantine inspections, but I had no checked bags so I got through those very quickly as well.

I was out of the airport and in a car to the city without much delay.

                        Next up, Melbourne!

                        To be continued...

                              Continuing with the TR...

My hotel in Melbourne was the Victoria Hotel. This was an old hotel first built in 1880. Very centrally located along Little Collins Street, right in the Melbourne CBD, this was a hotel very popular with tourists and travellers.

This was a large, budget-friendly hotel with decent rooms and helpful staff. While the rooms were fairly basic, the location was great, and after this trip, this hotel has become a favourite of mine when travelling to Melbourne, especially if on a tight budget.

The only thing to note about this property is that the complimentary internet was quite slow. I got around this by using a prepaid Telstra SIM card in my phone with a fast 5G data plan, and used that during my stay instead of the inhouse internet. Apart from that, this property offered a comfortable stay at excellent room rates.

                              The lobby...

My room, with double bed and flat screen TV.

                              Raygun was on the news...

                              Work table...

Coffee/tea making facilities and a mini fridge...

                              Bathroom...

                              ...with shower.

While not luxurious or stylish, this was a comfortable and spacious room to spend time in.
