  • EK405 MEL - SIN in J

After being issued with our boarding pass and express immigration cards. With just one and a half hours to go before scheduled boarding time, we head towards the restricted area of the Terminal.

Security was very tight even when leaving the country, thus the queue is very long. Thankfully, with the express card, you get to head to the express security check area and get to use the expedited customs lane.

In less than 15mins, we cleared both checkpoints and found ourselves in the duty free area. We decided to waste no time and head straight to the Emirates lounge located just above the boarding gate of our flight. The walk took almost as long as the time taken to clear security and immigrations.

On entering the lounge, we was informed that our flight will be announced once it is ready for boarding. Free wifi was also available at the lounge. The washroom/ showers are located behind the doors in the picture above. Details photos included slightly below into this blog post.

The lounge also provides great plane spotting opportunities, you can see the runway and your plane itself being towed into the gate in preparation for your return flight.

We are getting bulkhead seat for our return flight, a rather comfortable experience with additional legroom. Emirates J class seems more comfortable, I can't say the same if you are seated in the middle. Emirates business class configuration is in 2-3-2 unlike Singapore Airline's 2-2-2 or 1-2-1 for SQ long-hauls.

EK's inflight entertainment system is abit laggy and sometimes hang midway into the show. Resulting in you having to restart and fast forward again. The massage feature is quite irritating and of no use, even on long haul flights. The remote touchscreen controller have to be re-docked at every five minutes interval or it will lose it connectivity, rather pointless to me.

The glass of red took it's time to come, I had to ask different cabin members twice to get it served so I can take this picture and proceed with my dinner. The beef was dry and hard as a frozen slab of concrete. I should have listen to the experts and avoid beef streaks totally in-flights.

Should have listen to the advise of experts here ....

Thanks for the TR! It has been a while since I flew Emirates.

Actually, I almost always order the steak when it is on the menu, just to see if anyone has been able to do it right. Most of the time, it is not about the best steak, but the "least bad".

But SQ has got it right for me exactly twice. Here is one example where they achieved the near impossible: a delicious steak inflight...

      Hi yflyer,

I was reading your post on how SQ got the right steak for you here in SIN at 2am. Your first photo of the beef steak got me hungry =x

The second photo was worst, now I'm going to find something to eat from the fridge. The steak looks succulent, paired with which red?

Maybe I might give the beef another try, but this time with SQ as my flight plans for the foreseeable future is within the region. (KUL, BKK, HKG)

sgflight, thanks for the TR. I took the exact same route (and EK404) several times, I agree with you on almost all counts
        - the spaciousness and wider offerings - of EK MEL Lounge (but dont know if QF's partnership will make it more crowded) relative to MEL SKL;

        - the comfort of EK seat though it is obviously narrower than SQ's World's Widest Biz Class seat, and agree with you that EK's 2-3-2 cannot compare with SQ's 2-2-2 at its worst, and definitely cant match up to 1-2-1

These said, I do like the EK seat massage function and have no prob with EK ICE - I dont like the IFE controllers on my body and most of the time control the IFE controller from their docking stations, including on SQ, and so this does not bother me. Well, to each his own.

Service wise, I find SQ and EK crew (at least on the SIN-MEL rtn routes) par.

One small trivia which EK trumps SQ - the Bulgari Amenity Kit =)
